R lenses on Canon DSLRs

Perhaps this has been discussed before but I could not find truly exhaustive posts.

I have a few R lenses, mainly teles (I tend to use the M8 for wide angle shooting) but have not used them much recently because I have pretty much switched to digital. Now that I would like to get back to tele work I am thinking of buying a DSLR to use my R glass. The DMR prices seem very steep (but reasonable offers welcome! - PM me) and I am not too convinced by the Digilux 3. That brought me to consider a Canon DSLR, preferably full-frame like the 5D.

Can anyone share his/her experience of an R glass - Canon DSLR combo, please? Any luck? Any problems? All comments are MUCH appreciated.

Thanks!

Absolutely positive except that you may have some problems with mirror clearance when using some wide angle lenses.

Guy can spend a day or two on this with you ... also here's an exhaustive list of compatibility with Canon cameras in jpeg.

Of course, the best result is still achieved with the DMR. LOL

Here's one with the 80/1.4.

Thanks - very nice. But, is this DMR or Canon?

Sorry I didn't mention it ... this was shot with a 1D3 at ISO1600. My eyesight is quite poor even with the brightest screen, such critical focus in candle light with a 80/1.4 wide open is almost impossible to me.

Pebble Place

the reference list for r lenses on the dslrs.

i've used them with the 20d and the xti with no problems.

this includes the 16mm fisheye: dancer pics taken last week chico dance theatre 2007: run-thru Photo Gallery by wayne pease at pbase.com

these with the 50 2.0 chico dance theatre 2007: the mirror Photo Gallery by wayne pease at pbase.com

and here are some park pics using these two plus the 75-200, 28-70, 28 2.8, 90 2.8, and 135 2.8. along the creek Photo Gallery by wayne pease at pbase.com

i love the combination. the xti has very simple, quick controls, and is light. you can see i even used it for dance pics under lousy conditions. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

also i use three different confirmation adaptors purchased on ebay. they work really well. otherwise i couldn't be using this combination with my eyes.

ps. also bought r extension tubes and a 2x converter. they too confirm with these adaptors.

There is lots of info on the net about using Leica R lenses on Canon Dslrs. Please see Andrew Nemeth's site for an over view. I have used my Leica R lenses on a variety of Canon Dslrs starting with the D60 all the way up to the 5D. Currently I am using R lenses on an Olympus 330E and the live view with 10X magnification makes for easier accurate focusing - providing your subject is static. See Gary Todoroff's site for info on using the Oly

Thanks for the responses so far.

To be a bit more specific: assume I want to shoot a Summicron-R 180/f2 with the 5D. One scenario being wildlife (with the 2x extender), the other one being portraits. Wide open we are talking critical focus. I understand there are alternative focussing screens (found something called EE-S).

Any comments on such a setup, particularly on focussing accuracy?

None of the screens will do its justice ... you'll need one of those Chinese made focus confirmation adapters. What they do is basically fooling the 5D so it thinks the 180/2 is a Canon lens so the body will enable the focus confirmation function for you.

There're two guys selling these on eBay, try find the seller "happypagehk" or "ericcc1006". It's only 40 US dollars. I have 6 of them mounted on all my f/1.4 and f/2 lenses, the one with the 80/1.4 I posted was shot with the adapter.

Took me 10 seconds to find one for you ...
