At 116 grams it’s going to add too much weight for me personally. I can just turn my camera into portrait on my ball head. Not sure I see the value here.

To each their own.  Everyone has a different style and needs.  I switch between portrait and landscape orientations a lot and it is a lot faster with an L bracket.  Once the tripod head is level it is fast to do the switch.  Have used the RRS bracket on three Nikons and on my Q2.  Too bad I could not adapt the Q2 bracket to the Q3.  Did not feel like grinding away on it too much and making it look like crap.

Q3 only needs the L grip for handheld except for selfie. I doubt you would have trouble with most ball head.
However, if the price is right or there is justifiable extra quality, I don’t mind the U-grip. RRS does not justify for me.

The JJC HG-Q3 Arca Swiss mount is my choice for looks and light-weight.  The RRS "L" is heavy and looks "added" on to such a small camera.  However if Portrait orientation on a tripod is your requirement(often) then RRS is a better choice.

It really depends on which camera and how you use it. Only the individual can determine. If it is S3, I would say U grip is much preferred to L grip. If it is Q3, the difference could be ignorable. I guess the weight issue is not as important as price and availability. But hey, it is not my money, my word is not important.
