Stuart: Thanks for the good advice: "I think you should live with it unless it really bothers you or impacts your work. . . . A trip to Leica service is likely to take months to sort out. Life is too short." I'm pretty sure that's where I am going to end up. I appreciate your thoughtful response.

That is kind of like reviewing a sports car with snow chains on it.

Actually here in the Colorado Rockies in the winter snow chains can be a pretty nice addition on a sports car (or any car for that matter).

Thanks for the great comments, which I completely agree with. The APO and the non-APO are different lenses with different features. Just pick the one that fits your need.

I bought the 35 SL to use as a substitute for my now departed Q3--viz. to have a relatively lightweight, compact, weather resistant, and autofocus set-up.

BEG - I’m sorry that my question diverted the discussion away from your question about the focus ring. My interest in the non-APO 35 summicron-SL is exactly the same as yours - I want to sometimes use my SL as a Q substitute. I’ve been using it that way with my manual focus 35 summicron-m but there are times when I really want autofocus. Buying the 35 APO lens is almost as much as a new Q2. I’d rather add the Q2 function to my SL. So the non-APO seems to fit my need well. I’ve pixel peeped the images posted by the reviewers, and my conclusion is that the non-APO images on the SL look pretty darn good. The APO images are better, for sure, but they are also better than the images from the Q2 and Q3. So for a “Q substitute”, the non-APO 35 seems like the right way to go.

No worries. I have enjoyed the conversation. I'm also glad to know that both of our SL2/35 ASPH strategies seem to be working out nicely. Have fun!

I ordered the non-APO 35 summicron-SL today. I’ll let you know if there’s anything unusual with the focus ring.
