fefe Posted November 20, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I saw it at a street fair in Frankfurt last month, it says Leitz Wetzlar 1971 on the box: (larger one here http://elfefe.zenfolio.com/img/v2/p399195616.jpg) 1:1 crop of the text: My german is rusty, and I am not sure I would ever have understood it, so what is it ? Advertisement Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Hi fefe, Take a look here What is it ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Marquinius Posted November 20, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 20, 2007 It looks like military optics, either for a howitzer, or for a mortar. These things are transported apart from the howitzer/mortar/whatever as they don't like the shaking and the noise, let alone the dust and dirt. But that is about as far as I get. The text isn't really helpfull, as it only describes what's in the box (typically military trick to stick a sign on something saying: "whatchamacallit, one, military use only, for the use of, mark Ia1 ... and I may say as I've been in the army long enough to know). You could try googling on some of the numbers, but I think I have better things to do. One advice: don't buy it. Really, it isn't worth anything. Or you just have to have the howitzer with it and plans to use it.
Marquinius Posted November 20, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 20, 2007 Well, I couldn't resist it and googled (I must be mad ... but then again, that's what my wife said when I bought my M8:) ). As far as I can find it is a measuring/calibrating tool for calibre 20 to 26 mm, which means for infantry on board weapons (like the canon you see on those Bradleys). You use these optics to check if your gun is still aligned, which means that you want to be extra carefull handling them. I found some info that could relate to it: the German Army had a few armoured vehicles carrying 20mm guns, like the "Marder". And on Ebay you can buy things like this for somewhere between € 30 and € 90. But it's stricktly for collectors. I mean, what are you going to DO with it? So there. Now I challenge other readers to get into this thing as well and come up with the EXACT name, use, etc. Come on, it's raining anyway and your wife already thinks you're nuts with your camera and lenses. fefe Posted November 20, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted November 20, 2007 Thanks for the infos, I didn't buy it, neither even asked the price when I saw it did not have a screw or a bayonet I could fit my M8 . Plus I was on a short trip in the city because of a long connection at the airport so I wasn't seeing myself come back with a gigantic box of military equipment to check in on my flight to Tel Aviv. Mystery solved .
Marquinius Posted November 20, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 20, 2007 Customs, guys having been in the Army as well I guess in Istrael, would probably have laughed their heads off ... "look at this guy, he's toting all these museum pieces around". But then again ... no, not such a good idea ANYWHERE at this moment. Enjoy life!
