Advertisement Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 Hi colonel, Take a look here Leica Q3 with external microphone. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Miltz Posted November 20, 2023 Share #2 Posted November 20, 2023 As far as we know the answer is no. There is a hope that Leica might add support for usb-c to 3.5mm support via firmware in the future, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. Separate audio right now is the only option for any serious video work as the on board mics and pre-amp are just okay.

colonel Posted November 21, 2023 Author Share #5 Posted November 21, 2023 So if I use a Atomos Ninja to record from the q3, and an extra microphone system into the ninja to record audio at the same time, that seems the easiest way. I am missing an even easier way ?

I’m using an external sound recorder, by far the best way to get decent sound, the preamp stages in any camera tend be quite poor so even if you could plug in a mic the quality is questionable. Daniel Novello Posted February 14, 2024 Share #8 Posted February 14, 2024 Been in touch with Leica Customer Care today. They could confirm that a future firmware update will allow for a microphone to be connected to the Leica Q3. No further details were given. 2

Even if the preamps aren't that clean, it's a good option. Apart from the appalling rolling shutter effect - the video options are very decent. Looks good after grading. Though it be nice if they offered ProRes on 4k too. I actually like the onboard mics. Bit of a muted/low key sound.

BTW: I hate watching a 10 minute video to learn something that would take me 30 seconds when reading it. So, that guy, does he use a Rode Mic with his Leica? ColdShower Posted April 5, 2024 Share #11 Posted April 5, 2024 For control environments, you can use the onboard mic of the Q3 and use Adobe's online Ai podcast tool https://podcast.adobe.com/ and in some cases it makes that audio work as good as being shot with a mic. Results may vary depending how far you are from the camera. You can also use a mic like a DJI wireless II that records internally or use your iphone as an external mic and sync in post. Yes, of course we all get that any serious video work requires capturing sound on a standalone recorder. But that’s missing the point of the Q3, isn’t it!? It’s supposed to be a compact all-in-one device that is easy to use, and easy to take around with you. It’s not designed for serious video work. If you’re going to have a recordist with you, who has a Sound Devices 788 in a bag, and a boom pole with a 416 in a Rycote on the end of it, you won’t be filming with something like a Q3, now will you? Not having a way to have at least some sort of decent compact shotgun, like a Rode video mic pro makes the video feature on the Q3 not very useful. Jeffry Abt Posted December 13, 2024 Share #15 Posted December 13, 2024 https://brandstore.rode.com/collections/accessories/products/sc21-usb-c-to-usb-c-30cm-cable Would this be the cable to connect the VideoMic GO II to the Q3 43?
ruskkyle Posted December 13, 2024 Share #16 Posted December 13, 2024 (edited) That will be far too long. I’d look for any usb-c cable 10cm or less in length, or even better a coiled one. Edited December 13, 2024 by ruskkyle
Jeffry Abt Posted December 13, 2024 Share #17 Posted December 13, 2024 Kyle, thank you! But it does need to be USB-c on both ends?

jansjo Posted February 5 Share #19 Posted February 5 Anyone know about a cable usable to connect external mic (e.g. sennheiser or audio technica) to Q3 with mini jack? = female mini jack to usb-c. I have tried a cheap one that didn´t work.
Tarekith Posted February 5 Share #20 Posted February 5 It looks like only specific Rode devices are supported by the USB-C port on the Q3. 1
