Beeing a bit shocked (😉) by Stuarts comments on the 30-90 mm, I took a look at my pictures. I found 2200 shots made with the zoom. Now looking for pictures taken at 90mm that would allow to evaluate the corner performance, I could find any, because the edges are either out of focus or have no details (water, sky...). This confirms his last comment, the edges might not be important for everyone. However, I became curiuos. I made a quick comparison with the Summarit 70mm.

Here is a view from behind the house, a dull and misty morning:

Here is crop from the Summarit 70 mm shot:

And for comparison the zoom @90 mm:

The difference doesn´t drive me mad.

I own the 24, 35, 70, 120 and 180mm....they are better. They are better in contrast and colours, but if weight or weather gives restrictions, I´m happy with the zoom.

As I can see, blowing these samples up to 400%, zoom has more crisp, clear and natural detail rendering (tree branches and trunks near the ground at the right edge). Details from the prime are a bit smudged and unclear despite higher overall contrast. What was an aperture selected on both? Have you focused on centeral part? This example clearly proves a zoom is capable to render as a prime or better even on 90mm in farthest corners (if you are lucky enough to get a good copy). It is surprising, but it seems to perform better than its MTF claims. What the first four digits of serial number of the zoom you have? Trying to determine what batch to look with the most attention :)

Hi,

both pictures are taken with f 6.8. The serial number of my lens starts with 411. The camera was fixed to a heavy  tripod. I can‘t remember how I focussed. Most likely using the rear screen, as the the normal focus field sits somewhere in the grey sky.

As said earlier, the primes have more contrast and richer colours, but avoiding lens change in nasty weather conditions is a huge plus. By the way, the 30-90mm performs excellent on the SL bodies.

Good luck finding a lens.

Andreas
