filmtrait Posted November 10, 2023 Share #1 Posted November 10, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I have the latest version of the 50mm F2 with built in Lens Hood and I have the dreaded flare issues. I've heard that using a longer lens hood can help mitigate the issue, but does anyone have any recommendations on what would work on the lens? Thanks! Advertisement Posted November 10, 2023 Posted November 10, 2023 Hi filmtrait, Take a look here Summicron 50 F2 (Latest Gen) - Lens Hood Recommendation. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
michael_b Posted November 12, 2023 Share #2 Posted November 12, 2023 As the build in hood is often pushed back, I decided to you use a screwed lens hood for my Summicron 50. In that case I also don't use a lens cap, as the lens is protected by the hood. My setup is like this: M9, Summicron M-50, B+W 39 mm UV-IR filter, 39-46 step-up ring from Heliopan and then the JJC-46GFII lens hood: Welcome, dear visitor! mujk Posted February 8, 2024 Share #4 Posted February 8, 2024 (edited) For anyone else looking for a similar Summicron hood, there are also hoods with a slightly smaller diameter and native 39mm thread. I ordered one by a seller called Fotover on amazon.de for less than EUR 10 (+shipping). It seems to be of good quality and does not vignette visibly. It remains to be seen how much better it is to reduce flare than the built-in hood. Welcome, dear visitor! Interested to know if you are still happy with this hood and if it reduced flare ?
mujk Posted March 3 Share #6 Posted March 3 @Big Jim Yes, I still like the hood very much and use it all the time. It reduces flare due to bright light coming at certain angles better than the built-in hood. Of course it cannot do miracles when the bright light is very near the border of the image frame. Like the similar Leica hoods for previous versions of the Summicron it makes the camera-lens combo somewhat bulkier, taking up more space in the bag. But at least for me it does not disturb the view through the viewfinder. I don't think it's a hood you would want to attach and detach all the time.
Alberti Posted March 4 Share #7 Posted March 4 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had a screw-on hood too on my v5. But I noted that then the lens housing gets under some kind of tension; that is, that the front would even loosen up. This is because there is a ring against which the hood would pull itself. When having a filter in between (as a spacer) this does not happen. I hope that my experience is not confusing.
