Hi,

I have a M11 Monochrome and still have my old Nikon FM3A film camera. Now I am thinking about a Leica film camera and hesitating between the P and A. I know the major difference Ligthmeter. My doubt is.: Is this the only diference or the mechanical parts are also different ?   I heard comments in both directions .... anyone has information that can help me?...thanks

I have both and there are subtle differences beyond the meter and trim;  most noticeable are:

  • The 75mm frame lines on the M-A are very minimalistic.
  • The shutter release stroke length is shorter on the M-A as there is no meter half-press. I think this alone makes the M-A feel smoother and more precise.

The meter on the MP is a mixed blessing as it will distract and slow you down if you try to use it for every shot, but it is useful for accurately pre-setting the exposure when learning a new film's characteristics.
