This  Leitz cap is 52mm but what was it originally fitted to?  I have seen Leitz caps on projectors but not black ones.

Regards, Rob.

I think the "Leitz" caps were, as you say, mostly for projectors and other non-camera equiptment. The name of the company was "Leitz" whereas "Leica" was of course a compound of leitz and camera.  And they seemed in most cases to closely associate Leica only with the camera and lens products.  The earliest caps did not have a logo and were usually made of a composition of non-metalic fibrous material. I see these mostly on macro lenses and epidiascope lenses.  Here is a photo of some "Leitz" caps, I think the flat ones, like yours, are likely an earlier version, and the doomed ones were likely post war. There are all colors and sizes including black and grey hammertone finish.
