RRS Plate and Universal L plate on the M8?

Yes many, not me but others.

One thing I find with the M cameras is I don't like having a QR plate attached to it all the time. So that is why I use the standard STOCK base plate to mount my style of QR plate to and then just swap out the base plates. Grip base for hand held and standard base with QR attached if I'm going with the tripod.

Even IF I didn't have the grip base I still wouldn't have a QR plate attached to the camera all the time.

There maybe a time when I do want to use my M8 on my tripod I've got an RRS ball head and quick release on it.

I see RRS has now a plate for the M8 and also show the Universal L plate as working.

Has any one used the L plate or the simple plate?

John I have and use both style RRS plates. The simple small plate stays on a grip plate all the time. It has a custom feel and is small enough to just leave on the camera. The L plate is a Universal L plate so isn t custom to the M8 ...it fine on the bottom but you must leave a little room on the side . You have to tightened it to keep it from sliding around. It works great in either horizontal or verticle positions. Its just not a custom fit like my RRS L plate for the 5D.

Ditto, and I have the Kirk plate. Can attest that it is well made.

I prefer the Kirk plate than the RRS for the M8; seems to be slightly longer. Have the Kirk attached to my grip when needed, otherwise, the camera sits snugly in a Luig case.

Have used the RRS L bracket (and many accessories) for Nikon and Canon and all are exceptionally built.

I use both as well --- an RRS BPCs on the grip base and an RRS Universal L on the plain base. Note the BPCs has a strap lug for a wrist strap -- click for a larger version, click again for a 1200 pix version:

When you have a hand strap on the grip plate, where do you attach the other end of the strap? Do you put it on the strap lug on the body or have you made an attachment point in the grip?

If you put one end on the body and the other en on the RRS plate, how well does the base come off to change cards or batteries?

Hi Rob:

When I used the hand strap, I attached it to a split ring mounted in the lug hole on the camera. The base came off fine, but of course remains attached to the camera, so I just kind of let it dangle while I swapped batteries or cards.

I have since gone back to neckstraps on both bodies, and just wrap the strap around my wrist when carrying the camera in my hand. I suspect if I knew I was going to be handholding a body for a long period of time, I would prefer the dedicated wrist strap.
