RFPlumber Posted July 25, 2023 Share #1 Â Posted July 25, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently acquired a M5, I shot a roll without issues and seemed to be working great. Second roll the shutter would not fire. I removed the film and it still would not fire. I found that it will fire if I have the bottom plate off. This makes absolutely no sense to me but it certainly is consistent. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

RFPlumber Posted July 25, 2023 Author Share #3  Posted July 25, 2023 Yes the bottom plate is definitely on correctly. Also I don’t believe the spool is removable on the M5. Although this is the first one I have ever used, if I unlock the baseplate down enough to hear the counter reset the shutter will then fire. As soon as I lock the baseplate on it will cock but not fire.
105012 Posted July 25, 2023 Share #4 Â Posted July 25, 2023 M5 spool is not removable. The M5 is a mechanical camera (ignoring light meter), so there must be something stopping the firing of the shutter, such as the rewind lever not resetting (or, more unlikely, the frame counter lever somehow blocking the wind on)... ? Hintsalae Posted July 25, 2023 Share #8 Â Posted July 25, 2023 Spool can be removed. Just turn camera upright and grab ghe little plastick stick that comes out of the tulip. After pulling it out you can inspect the shutter firing mechanism with. There's disk on bottom which can stop shutter from firing.

If from the beginning with film in the camera, read pg 25 of the owner's manual.  The film rewind crank arm needs to be folded down flat in it's stored position. There is no other explanation.   Edited July 28, 2023 by Bronco McBeast Typo
Hintsalae Posted July 28, 2023 Share #12 Â Posted July 28, 2023 It's a part of cameras mechanism. Rotating disk with cutout to shutter release. Prevents firing shutter when it's not advanced completely. If mechanism is out of sync for some reason you can see the cutout being in the way of shutter release rod even though it should allow firing.

That really does not explain why the camera fires with or without the bottom plate.
Hintsalae Posted August 1, 2023 Share #14 Â Posted August 1, 2023 It might. The disk attached in bottom plate which opposes the tulip. That closes the tulit and that might explain the issue. Other parts of the bottom plate can't cause problems like that. Remove tulip and attach bottom plate to test this. The small knob which actuates frame counter reset can't cause issues like that to my knowledge.
