M8 Moire

Moire is supposed to happen only in certain circumstances. Golf is one of them.

So far attempts to mitigate have been futile. C1 Pro refuses to deal with it, since it is not a Pxx back. Any hints? All regular recipes *bluring b channel and the like* failed.

Thanks!

I posted a while back about a photoshop moire plugin from capture one, if you go to their website they have an archive section of old releases, and if you find capture one DB 3.7.1 and download it, in the extras folder on the disc image there is the plugin you can install and run. It works and would handle this easily. (mac afaik-maybe they have a pc version not sure)

versions of capture one db after (3.7.2) had the moire plugin built in and will not work.

hth.

i can yousendit to you too.

The pants are very gray, so once you select them with the selection tool in Photoshop, bring the saturation down to about -75 or lower. They will look nearly the same, but without the colored moire. If the gray then looks too cold, you can select the pants again and add just a touch of yellow and red in the color balance. Some weird patterns will still be there, but they'll be small and should be much less noticeable without the color.

processed in c1DB anti-moire plugin-

i think the artifacts are from jpegging over and over, the dng's I have processed have been fine. You might need to go in with a history brush and restore some areas where it is too aggressive. I do a selection first before I launch the plugin to speed the computation and limit the collateral damage.

FYI, the plug-in doesn't work with Photoshop CS3.

and cs2 is "unsupported" in leopard, which makes me not long to upgrade. I guess I will be keeping cs2 on the disc for the times when I need this plugin, not to mention old scanners, etc...

sigh.

thanks for the heads-up

If you do decide to move to 10.5 before CS3 gets updated and you find PS crashes on exit, remove the TWAIN plug-in. (Now, if I could just get C1 to stop crashing while building thumbs and previews . . .)

This is one of the main reasons I do not use the M8 for advertising work. I just don't have time to deal with it. In editorial it might run smaller so it is not as big a deal..

While I feel your pain, moire is a "feature" of every medium format digital back like leaf and phase. That is why their capture software has these tools to deal with it.

In studio we get to deal with it usually as we are shooting, either by backing up slightly or twisting the camera a few degrees, sometimes it goes away. On some fabrics, nothing you do will make it go away, so out comes the software.

The only cameras that don't feature this are the ones with filtration like canon and nikon, so your classification breaks down there.

It is a pita tho, I do corporate work with it and I am guaranteed "guys in ties" as subjects, so if I had to hand off an entire disc of tiffs it would be not worth the hassle, so I agree. This is actually a case for better jpegs out of camera-handingn off a disc of full res jpegs is not uncommon, or sending the entire shoot as small jpegs fpo does happen. I would not be comfortable doing that.

The plugin works fine. One stop.

Thanks to all for your insights. Our medium Imacon and Kodak DCS never produced this kind of Moire. Neither did our Kodak DCS SLR pro... Well, I guess no more golf for the M8. You should see some other people shirts!!!! They look like the hotdog mustard spilled all over.

I will try the plugin, thanks for pointing out how to download it Robert.

Gus - 30 seconds work in Photoshop:

On duplicate layer take a good colour sample of the material, with a paintbrush set to 'Colour' paint the material [@ 100%]. Easy Peasy.

.............. Chris

Sorry about the shrinkage, still having problems posting images, the file was fine at 100% download size. Give it a try.

I think there is some confusions here as I don't believe the patterns in this example are moire. They are a maze like pattern from the demosaicing process of the raw converter. I can't say if you can expect the DeMoirize plugin to do a good job on it. (It may help remove the color but the pattern will remain.)

The unreleased version 5 of DxO claims to be an improvement in this regard, but I don't believe it will support the M8.

If you go to this link and click on the letters A,B, and C of the first example you will see similar maze artifacts:

I had to give up the Kodak SLR/n because of moire and christmas tree lights, having a fix that takes just 30 secs is a non starter when you have 300 images you need to get in the post.

My quick fix was a rough selection with the paint brush then desaturate.

Kevin.
