kirkmc Posted June 21, 2023 Share #1 Posted June 21, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can anyone share photos of the Q3 with the new Leica lens hood? I’m not a huge fan of the rectangular lens hood, which I have on my Q2M, and I’m curious to see how the new Leica lens hood looks. Even at the ridiculous price of £200. GRBrown Posted June 21, 2023 Share #2 Posted June 21, 2023 I found this photo at the macfios.com blog: https://www.macfilos.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Q3-w-accessories.jpg
NicoX Posted June 27, 2023 Share #3 Posted June 27, 2023 Is there an added-value to this hood by the way, other than aesthetics?
ikc Posted July 1, 2023 Share #4 Posted July 1, 2023 Overall, my impression is that the rectangular hood supplied with the camera is superior in its ability to block light that would cause a flare. I think that the new vented hoods have been produced in response to demand as it relates to aesthetics and economics (retro Leica styling, easy additional accessory revenue stream). The only functional aspect of the vented hood that I can think of would be that it might be easier to rotate a circular polarizer (and not sure, but I think it's designed such that one could attach filters to the threads on the distal portion of the hood). There is obviously no functional benefit to the vents, as there is no optical viewfinder.
NicoX Posted July 3, 2023 Share #5 Posted July 3, 2023 That's what I thought. 🙂 Thank you for chipping in!
Pelu2010 Posted July 3, 2023 Share #6 Posted July 3, 2023 I Never use the rectangular hood because it’s a pain to put on a filter. I use the thread savety ring to keep the outer threads save and I usually put on different filters and don’t care about the light entering the lens. The lens is so good that the “flares” don’t bother me. I found that everything that happens to be on the lens it’s Elbe (water, dust, ) makes such a nice out of focus structure , that it is a joy to watch. MakinMemories Posted July 14, 2023 Share #7 Posted July 14, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Not a fan of the standard hood either and have the Leica round hood arriving Saturday along with the Leica half case. I like the looks of the round hood better, filter access is better and you can use a 49mm Leica (or aftermarket) clip on plastic lens cap.
BrassMonkey Posted July 22, 2023 Share #8 Posted July 22, 2023 So, is there enough width in the new round Leica Q lens hood to change filters / adjust polarizer with you fingers without removing the hood ? Or, just enough space to accidentally cross thread ? Any related thoughts on the new round hood ?

I got this for my Q https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B078WSHFJ6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Hell...I'll sell it to you at 1/2 the price Leica is asking 😆
1945 Mouton Posted July 26, 2023 Share #10 Posted July 26, 2023 One thing to note is that the regular Leica lens cover will not fit the new round Leica lens hoods. You will have to use a clip-on lens cap, which to me is an affront to the design esthetics.
FusionX.Photo Posted July 26, 2023 Share #11 Posted July 26, 2023 I find it mildly amusing that when I had Fujifilm everyone in Fuji world wanted rectangular lens hoods, now i'm in Leica world people want round lens hoods. Leica have given us a beautiful design, personally i'm not going to ruin my Q3 by removing a hood that not only looks great but offers excellent protection to the front element, others will disagree i'm sure. 8

This is quite fiddly with the rectangular hood.
