Olaf_ZG Posted June 19, 2023 Share #1 Posted June 19, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Many people put out the request for a tilting screen. Finally it is here. Please tell me: how is it? Is it useful in daylight? Build quality? Thanks.

hedleyw Posted June 19, 2023 Share #2 Posted June 19, 2023 So far I’m impressed. Good in daylight, stays put when I use the camera on a neck strap for street photography “from the hip”, and sturdy construction as you would expect from Leica. I’ve been using an X-T5 in that manner and find that screen tends to fold back in and would probably suffer damage over time.
acfieldscr Posted June 19, 2023 Share #3 Posted June 19, 2023 Pretty nice screen. Ergonomically it’s not brilliant. Coming from Fuji I’m not impressed with it but the rest of the camera is a dream
Miltz Posted June 20, 2023 Share #4 Posted June 20, 2023 I don’t have my Q3 yet, but I can’t say I’m not a little disappointed that my Nikon Z6 that I paid $1,700 in 2019 has a higher resolution screen that tilts better than the $6K Leica. I will report back when I have them side by side.
Bibowj Posted June 21, 2023 Share #5 Posted June 21, 2023 I have the Q3 and for me I find the screen incredibly useful. Sure its not perfect in how its installed but in practice its brilliant. Shooting from above, shooting from below etc. Im a tall guy, so all my Q2 shots have a look to them because of the angle. This helps a lot. I LOVE it.
Qwertynm Posted June 22, 2023 Share #6 Posted June 22, 2023 it is so sturdy that you can prop up your camera on a table to shoot "astro pictures" if you don't have a tripod handy. it's really well made
Pelu2010 Posted June 23, 2023 Share #7 Posted June 23, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I can say that it's good. Can it take a crash like my Q2? I don't know. But most of the time the screen is not in use. I have used it for some street shots and do a lot more low altitude shots. I will be testing the Q3 during the winter in Spain and it will be the only camera I take with me. So after this month I can really tell if the tilting screen is a curse or a blessing. I think people who work in remote locations will rely on the Q2. Cheers Peter
Sohail Posted June 23, 2023 Share #8 Posted June 23, 2023 I saw the Q3 for the first time earlier today. The tiltable screen looks terrible to my eyes. It ruins the elegant minimalist lines of what I'd expect of a Leica. It reminds me of a micro-four-thirds Panasonic camera like the Gx8 -- cheapening the look. If functionality has to trump form then like Panasonic they should have gone for a flippable screen.

It does the job for me. And I don't care that much about the look of the camera or the lens if it delivers. There was a demand and people wanted to have a tillable screen. I am guessing that this is the compromise Leica came up with. So maybe wait until the Q4 comes and delivers a new design .... 1
Sohail Posted June 23, 2023 Share #10 Posted June 23, 2023 Agreed. I'm sure it has its uses.

Today I went out with the Q2, saw a nice seen if taken from low perspective. Being in the blasting sun and being 50+, I was not in the mood to lie on the ground. Took the image, but it didn’t work as I was not able to compose. At that moment, design was total useless. 4
kirkmc Posted June 23, 2023 Share #12 Posted June 23, 2023 Like it. I’ve had Fujifilm cameras with a tilting display, and they’re practical if you want to shoot low. It’s not flush with the back of the camera like on the Q2, but it’s fine.

And with the tilting screen it sometimes is also necessary to lay down to get the perspective. if I could snap with my finger to get tilting screen or not I would love just that. criogenics Posted June 24, 2023 Share #14 Posted June 24, 2023 I found it hard to actually pop the screen out. You kind of have to dig in your fingers at the bottom of the camera, which is actually pretty hard to do. It would've been much nicer to have a tab that you can grab on without having to dig with your fingernails.

It's easy that way.

No thank you.

I don't think that the fully articulating screen is good for street photography, it's more aimed at video, e.g. selfies. That's why the latest Fuji X-T5 has dumped the fully articulating screen and gone back to the traditional flip screen, albeit that it will also flip in the vertical position. If you want to do street photography with a fully articulating screen at, e.g. 45 degrees, you end up with a big lump of plastic stuck out of the side of your camera and your head no longer aligned with the camera. Not exactly unobtrusive.

Yes, but when you do need to flip it you'll find taxis stopping when you DON'T want them Anyway, it's very much a personal preference, no right answer.
