What's the best way to focus the CV 15?

but at 100% I can look at a building half a mile away and see sharp details. i understand this theory at close focus but infinity is infinity and there is no area behind the plane of focus-the plane of focus is infinity right?

 

Well,Rod Serling might disagree, but yes I agree with you, there isn't anything useful "behind" infinity, so why not use the concept of DOF/hyperfocal point to sharpen the near field "at no cost".

i guess out of laziness and satisfaction. i generally spin the focus all the way one way or the other for the two ways i use this lens. all the way to 1 foot for a subject to stand out against an oof focus background or all the way to infinity for anything farther away than my arms reach....brad

There is only ONE distance that is "in focus". The sharpness? deteriorates on either side of this focus. The "depth of field" is a subjectively defined standard of degradation of the image (circle of confusion?) as it moves out of focus...

 

So, your results "work" for you because you are not enlarging your results beyond your subjective "tack" sharpness definition, and there is nothing wrong with that.

That's basically right. In essence, my recommendation is to estimate the primary subject distance, as well as possible, and set focus accordingly. The challenge comes from the CV having few markings for focus at mid and further distances. Its a great lens but I'd love to see an RF-coupled version.

I know it'sn't right on topic, but I own a CV15 from 6 days, lot to learn, and many of you have experience I haven't : what about lens recognition/coding : did you test it's REALLY necessary with the 15 ? I'm on the point to order a Milich machined BM adapter, and like to be assured is a right thing to do... have a pair of old originals adapter, but they are of the "uncodable" kind...

If you're going to filter the lens you'll need to either code it or use Cornerfix.

Its very easy to test this, just shoot a focus bracket starting at infinity and move the lens to the various dof marks at an aperture you like.

 

for f11 I have found I usually want it at infinity for distant objects, for a balance I put it at the first tick on the dof scale to the right, and for a nearer balance I put the infinity mark at the f4.5 scale mark.

 

I tried it at the f8 and f11 dof marks but found it made infinity look too soft for me. I did not see much to be gained after the f4.5 dof mark, so mostly it sits there or at the first tick to the right.

Agreed, and one reason I now use the 12 more than the 15 are the click-stops on the 12's focus. They make it VERY handy to zone focus without taking your eye from the VF...

Set on 2 metres and f8 (which is also sharpest f stop on mine) does it for me 99% of the time. f16 and f22 are not so good.
