For those who have the Q2 and looking to trade it in for the Q3, what is your experience/strategy?  Will you get more for the Q2 if you buy it from the same store?  Or are people buying the Q3 from one place and trading the Q2 in at a different place?  What if you don't have the original packaging?

Though I do think trading it in at the store is probably the easiest way to go about, rather than selling privately?

Easiest sure

But as an example, MPB would offer £3,025.00 trade in for an excellent condition Leica Q2, MPB sell them for £4449, on ebay someone is selling for £3850

So in this 'rough' example, you get another ~30% in value if you sold privately, there are ebay fees of course - but not all ways of selling privately have such fees, plus ebay do fee offers.

Personally I'd always sell privately, I can't afford to give away the £800 difference.

Here's a quick overview of the Q2 market in the UK

For any professional intermediaries you have to allow 15-25% fees. That is:

  • ebay fees.
  • difference between dealers' buying and selling prices.
  • commission for selling through a dealer.

Basically there's no free lunch.

Selling through the forum Classifieds is cheap; the market size is limited, but you can get an idea about someone through their posts. I have bought and sold here a couple of times.

My long time Camera Store offered $3500.00 CDN on a trade towards the Q3.  The saving on sales tax(12%) adds another $420.00 for a total of $3920.00.  The price of the Q3 is $8199.00.  My cost after trade and Sales Tax amounts to $5136.00.

Private sale will probably fetch another $2000.00, but is it worth the hassle.?

For me, certainly, I guess for you no :)

I guess if I didn't value what amounts to about £1200, I would probably just give the camera away to a family member, because it wouldn't be worth my time selling it.

If I were trading in I would probably use the same shop that I had bought it and/or other Leica products from BUT check other shops to make sure you were getting a good price. I bought my Q2 from Leica UK online during lockdown rather than from a specific store so I arguably have a bit more flexibility about choosing where to trade in. If I could afford to do so, I would get a quote from the independent Leica dealer that sold me my M11 and associated lenses. As I can’t afford to upgrade to a Q3 unless I trade in the M11 instead, I’ll stay as I am for now.

I dont think that you can sell around £3800 as brand new has 10% discount already from  Leica (according to Leica Harrods)

You can see sold prices here on eBay. I doubt that you will be able to get more than £3000-3200 after fees.

I used to get £1 final fee offers, now I get 80% off final fee - maybe if I stop using ebay so much they'll up it again
