I sent my 35mm Summicron ASPH lens off (Priority Mail insured) on 30 August 2007 to Leica Service USA in New Jersey. The box contained a letter explaining exactly what I wanted done to the lens plus my credit card # for payment of the required US$125.00 fee.

It returned today (UPS two-day air). The box contained the lens in its case and box just as I had sent it plus a Leica survey form.

Turnaround time: 11 weeks, door to door. Does that mean they are flooded with work or just lost my lens for a while in the pile (or some of both?) I'm sure we'll never know.

Just the facts...

Now,

it's this is a bit funny:

I sent the same lens as you for coding to NJ (by Kindermann) from Toronto back in middle of October. Gery from Kindermann called me today and told me the lens is back!!!

Maybe they do same lenses in "batch process" or such:confused:

I have another 3 lenses in NJ, and hope to get them soon...

Sent a 90mm Tele-Elmarit to NJ in the 5 month of this year for CODING with a voucher to get it done free. NJ sent me a letter saying that it needed to go back to germany, I said OK. Got a letter in late August stating that it would cost XXX.XX for the work that needed to be done, I said ??????, well OK do it. Got the lens back at the end of last week, Paid the fee they charged to do whatever they did and guess what. THEY DIDN'T CODE IT. Was told by NJ to send it it again, they suggested to use my own money to ship it. I made a call with some choice word and they then sent a call ticket for it. Shipped out on Monday and was received at NJ on Wednesday.

Lets see how long it is gone this time.

The word inept doesn't cover it.

Sadly this is not out of the ordinary. I sent a 35-70 Elmarit ® to have the aperture ring fixed and the lens CLA'd. They sent it back to Germany, charged me $1185 for the repairs and after four months returned it to me.

Upon return, the lens would not properly focus at all. I sent it back to Robert Fisk at Leica USA and asked him to give me priority service since I had waited so long for the lens in the first place.

The lens went back to Germany where it languished for another four months! Thankfully when the lens was returned all was well and they charged me no more for the work. But in total the lens was out of service for almost nine months which, to me, is worse than unacceptable! If I was a professional, needing the lens to make a living, I would not put up with this for a moment.

I just returned an M8 to USA service for an infinity focus problem. It went back to Germany and the estimated time to fix is four to six weeks. Good grief, no wonder pros stick with Canons and Nikons! As an amateur I will stick with Leica because I love RF shooting and the beautiful M lenses. But I am a fool if viewed from a commercial point of view.

If I had run my business like this I would have been out of business in a year

It's now about 4 weeks ago when I traveled for a family meeting north to south here in Germany an stopped by at Leica CS / Solms (was directly on the way). Handed the lady at desk 5 of my WA's (21 ... 35mm) for coding. Told that I will be back within 3 working days. Asked to check what could be possible this short time. Was told to come arround when on way back.

When coming in I got a smile and coment: " ... sorry one moment please, have to print the papers ..." and at the end of the action I went out with my full bunch of now coded and inspected lenses ... :)

Happy about this excellent service I left also my 50mm Summilux asph. at CS this time asking for coding too and as well for some inspection (distance setting is a little sticky).

... I'm (still) waiting now close to 4 weeks to see it back ... :(

Must be batched. I sent 35/1,4 and 90/2,0 to NJ in middle of October. I called and they estimated due back mid-December.

I received them 3 days ago for total time of just under 3 weeksn with coding.

Six weeks is "not bad"? This appears to be a few minute process of removing the old mounting ring and replacing it. Maybe they do a few other cursory checks/inspections but my goodness, the turnaround is atrocious.

By way of example, I sent Nikon an AF 300 f/2.8 lens because the focusing ring felt gritty. As soon as they received it I got an email notification of receipt. The next day I received an email detailing their inspection and an estimated cost. I approved the estimate the same day. Two days later I received an email confirming the repair and the cost and informing me that it had been shipped. Two days after that I received the lens. Not only did they repair the focusing mechanism, they cleaned the elements, the mounting ring and the aperture ring. Total time out of my hands was 9 days. And of course the communication from Nikon gave me a sense of confidence that things were moving along briskly.

Six weeks, eight weeks, eleven weeks? Adding the $125.00 "coding" is insult enough to the already injurious lens prices, the least Leica could do is make the process painless.

The guy that was sitting there waiting for my lens was sick that day.

This is a timely and helpful thread. I was just about to send off my 50 Summilux with the cracked UV/IR filter that I can't get off. Called a friend at a camera store not too far from where I live, and he thinks he can do it. I'll have to take time off from work some afternoon to drive to where he is, but better than losing my lens for several weeks...

I should have attached my post on my experience with my last three lenses to this one. Its too long but read "think twice about using leica service". A couple of things I learned through this process ....I have sent in 9 lenses for service. The wideangle lenses seem to be quite easy ..the mounts are changed out and thats it. out of 21,24,28 and 2 ..35 s only the 21 had a problem. Some how they knocked it out of alignment and it went to Solms and is now fine. The 90 came back with 6 bit but no repair to the retaining ring...close enough. The noctilux and the 50/75 summiluxes are a challenge..the mount seems to give them problems and lots of them back focus . 6 bit seems to be done seperately from the CLA , calibration ...so you sometimes get 6 bit without calibration or CLA without 6 bit. So I think if all you need is adding 6 bit for a wide angle your odds are pretty good ..otherwise think twice.
