Yes, the original Q. I love it but I was thinking just taking the Q would be limiting as it is quite wide but ok to crop at 35. If I can manage to carry the weight of both cameras I may bring both! My travel is only 2 weeks but I want to make sure that I don’t miss any shots. I’ve never travelled with 2 cameras before, so I also worry about carrying them around. Can I ask your experience in Central Asia and photography? I’ll be staying a few days in yurts and then some horse riding so mostly around nature.

Well, I am on a working holiday in Central Asia for this trip, so I do not have the same constraints or experiences that you will have with hiking, trekking, etc. Also, thinking further about my photography here, I could have made do with just a 24mm and 35mm lens. So, you might be best with just the Q -- when I had one a few years ago, it seemed wider than 28mm to me. And, as you mention, the 35 crop will be useful.

Plus, wide-angle M lenses would be easier to zone focus, while a 50mm or longer will take more time to learn -- so you might be better off just using the Q which you are comfortable with now.

My camera bag is also likely not much use for your situation. It is the smallest and lightest one I have found that does everything I need; I purchased it in Tokyo (Yodobashi Camera) about 10-12 years ago. It's a Japanese brand, "f64", black, durable, wear-resistant polyester. I can carry a camera+lens (or, in a pinch, two camera bodies with small lenses), plus a medium-sized notebook, an extra lens or two, glasses case, and it has a nice zipped pocket for my passport, money, etc. I have been looking for a replacement for years but want the smallest possible one that securely holds everything.

Let us know what you decide, and have a wonderful trip!

I had a 10-day trip to Uzbekistan last spring and brought my M-P (240) with the MATE, which did not force me to change lenses in a dusty environment, and a Q (very useful in low-light situations in mosques, madrasahs etc.), both packed in an Oberwerth Freiburg. No problem to carry it all-day in cities or landscapes. I also had my 21 mm CV color skopar with me and the macro elmar (both tiny), but only rarely used them. Have fun with your trip!

Hi everyone thanks for your inputs!!

I’ve been bringing the m240 around and I’m very optimistic about taking it with me. I love the photos! Since the trip is in about a month I think I may be going on some photo walks just to get used to the camera. I love my Q but I’m quite excited about my new gear 😄 the small size of the 35 with the 240 body is such a good size for travel compared to my Q.

Im thinking of getting a wider lens to add to my lineup but maybe not a Leica (budget restraints 😅)

Not sure whether you have left for your trip already but here is my 2 cents.

I do use my M240 for hiking and multi day backpacking. There was an old backpacking thread as well if you search.

I carry 40cron (imprecise frame lines don’t bother me) and 90mm macro-Elmar-m. These two are very light and cover my need. Sometimes I have carried Voigtlander 15mm v2 but I am not a wide angle guy. Also carry a light table tripod.

Hi! Just wanted to update on my trip last June!

I decided to just take the M240 and 35cron and did not regret it! The photos rendered were beautiful, and i realised focusing with a 35 isn't too difficult to learn. There were some out of foucs but most came out great. It went on a 4-day hike (unfortunately pretty wet conditions) and one of my batteries got drenched in the rain (i had forgot it was in my pocket - but it still works!) and stayed strapped on my body on a 3-day horse riding expedition. Needless to say, it was in dire need of a good cleaning and re-calibration when i got home.

I ended up ordering a Domke camera bag and it held up great. Next time i take it hiking i'd probably try to get a smaller lens if possible and maybe a chest strap so it doesn't weigh me down.

Thanks to everyone that gave their input! Here are some of my photos from the trip :)

(these aren't full res for file-size constraints)
