jimbobuk Posted November 8, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just received a 75mm lux today that is in great condition, i started trying to take pics but only after getting more time later in the day did i figure out it looked to be backfocussing. I've uploaded some pictures taken with it here Testing a 75mm Summilux - a photoset on Flickr all clearly show back focussing, some obvious without my description of where i was trying to focus. Anyways i've tried and tried and this just cant go away.. it seems to reduce slightly as you get very close, though the picture of the model car was attempting to focus at the front headlight specular.. obviously dof is shallow but i was fairly still. I've read about the infiniity adjustment, i'll have a good look across lenses to see if generally theyre good at infinity, when i get the chance. Is the infinity adjustment a warranty voider? I've dabbled with my R-D1 adjustments in the past with some success, but ultimately i think the R-D1 has an incorrect baselength calibrated, the one screw i can't reach without properly taking it apart. On the whole though the m8 has been spot on with focussing whenever i've tried. I've only really used the 35mm lux ASPH, a canon 50mm f1.2, VL 50mm nokton, 50mm Noctilux f1.0, and now the 75 lux. Generally they've all been spot on so i'm starting to wonder if the lens itself could be out. I wonder who could look into this, preferrably without my m8 as it seems so good with the other lenses i'd rather not adjust it unless i need to. Can you service the lens to standard "spec" without the camera? I'm based in the UK so would prefer a UK servicer. I will try the lens on my R-D1 and see if it too doesn't focus well on this. as i said its not perfect unfortunately but the backfocusing is quite large and at longer distances too so i should be able to clearly see if the same problem occurs on the R-D1.. should leave me near certain then that its the lens. Advertisement Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 Hi jimbobuk, Take a look here M8 + Summiliux 75mm backfocusing. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jimbobuk Posted November 8, 2007 Author Share #2 Posted November 8, 2007 Also, roughly how much is calibrating the lens likely to cost. Be good if it wasn't TOO much.
Jamie Roberts Posted November 8, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 8, 2007 James--I don't know where you're located, but if in North America, you could do worse than send the lens to Kindermann Canada, which is a repair depot for Leica. They fixed my back-focussing 75 Lux for $75. There are a couple of places in the US that do this too. It's always around $100, give or take.
JWW Posted November 8, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 8, 2007 When I bought my used 75 summilux, I had to adjust the M8 - real easy to do. Like tweaking a carburetor idle adjust. Also the new Noctilux Leica sent me yesterday is spot on which means it matches my 75. But in your case, if the Noctilux and other fast lens you tried are spot on then most likely your 75 is off. boilerdoc Posted November 8, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 8, 2007 DAG can adjust your lens in the US. He has my 90/2 now. Leica USA had my 75/1.4 for 6 months before i got it back. Not doing that again! Go with DAG. Steve PS: He uses his M8 to do the adjustments.

jimbobuk Posted November 9, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted November 9, 2007 Thanks guys.. i've been in contact with some local repair guys.. some potential with one but they all recommend trying with leica.. I'll get in touch with them tomorrow and see.. the possibility of possibly driving the m8 and lens down to them to be looked at on the day would be great if its an option. To try and remove the pain of the massive delay. DAG appeals but i will not go through the hassle of import duty and long distance dispatch. Work is hard at the moment so i dont really have any time to do anything. Cheers.
cnguyen Posted November 9, 2007 Share #9 Posted November 9, 2007 I would leave the M8 alone since it works with all your lenses so far. I had a early 75mm lux (canadian made) and it didn't focus spot on like yours. Either send it in for an adjyustment or buy another 75mm like I did. This time a late 75mm lux (german made) and it focuses spot on.

They can screw up a good lens so easy....

It won't take six weeks or cost thousands of dollars and you will have your camera (lens) back for shooting really quickly compared to Leica service Give it (and Kindermann in Canada) a try Woody Spedden
