rwchisholm Posted November 7, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello! Saw that there are a bunch of topics on flash and I thought I would add a bit... I have taken to shooting my kiddos around the house, and this, as we all know, can be challenging, as the little curtain-climbers are in constant motion and the M8 at high ISO isn't always as good as we'd like. So, I have been using the Canon 430ex on manual and I have made one of those "better bounce card" type foam diffusers (cost a whopping $3 and works much better than the $50 Fong-Dong that I use on my bigger Canon Speedlight 580ex). I shoot at 1/250 sec and adjust my camera accordingly. This has really helped with stopping-the-action/kids-in-motion photos. The 430 is also much smaller than the 580 and works well with the M8. -rob

Kostia Posted November 7, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 7, 2007 Do you need an adapter to use a canon flash on a Leica M8 ?...
rwchisholm Posted November 7, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted November 7, 2007 I read all the posts here about using a third party flash on the M8, and the general consensus seems to be that the "modern" flash units are safe. I use the 430ex and 580ex without an adapter, set the sync speed to 1/250, set the iso at 160 or 320 and can shoot at f/5.6 -f/8 in the house under lousy light. Now, granted, I probably won't win any awards with this setup, but it is fun for shooting the children. This way I don't have to get out the 5D for moving kid pics. Oh, you have to set the 430ex on manual mode. With the diffuser, I can usually set it at 1/8 or so and achieve nice, soft fill light. --rob
grober Posted November 7, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 7, 2007 Why even take a chance? With any non-Leica flash, I use a Wein SynchSafe between the flash and the M8. Absolute. -g
Jamie Roberts Posted November 8, 2007 Share #6 Posted November 8, 2007 Thanks for the idea- does the Canon 430ex have an automatic mode? Lloyd, to my knowledge, only the 580 EX V2 has the "E" mode (what Canon calls "auto" mode).
