spylaw4 Posted November 7, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted November 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, after what seems to have been a charmed life it has finally happened to me. I took some shots with the D2 yesterday and all were ok and transferred to the iMac successfully. But today when I look at the EVF/Display there it is - the dreaded purple shading. Â So it seems my D2 is off the Milton Keynes for a holiday. I presume that MK deals with it satisfactorily and I should not have to send it direct to Solms? Â Ah - but the next and knotty question is - if I get the offer - what to do as I already have the D3 equiv?.

DonQuijote Posted November 10, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted November 10, 2007 I would suggest that you keep the D3 and put the L1 on ebay. The D3 retains value longer, has a better warranty - only con is that it is not an inconspicuous camera than again which DSLR is given the noise they create. spylaw4 Posted November 10, 2007 Author Share #4 Â Posted November 10, 2007 I've decided to keep the D2 - for now. I've just picked up at a very good price a R6 body. So I will now be hunting R lenses. My guess is that Leica will have another 4/3 body in a year or so, whether a re-badged Panasonic or one of their own. Â While it's probably true the D3 will retain more value than the L1 as a percentage of its original purchase price, with L1's available for under $1k right now, it seems unlikely this will ever be true on an absolute dollar basis. Â For example, if a D3 depreciates more than ~40% during its lifetime, its owner will have suffered a greater loss of value in dollar terms than an L1 owner conceivably paid for his camera. Hence, if an L1 is worth anything at that point -- almost a certainty -- then the L1 owner will have laid out less cash total than the D3 owner for privilege of owning and using the camera over some period of time. TonySx Posted November 12, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted November 12, 2007 So it seems my D2 is off the Milton Keynes for a holiday. I presume that MK deals with it satisfactorily and I should not have to send it direct to Solms? Â I drove mine to Milton Keynes and they handled everything. The only thing to watch out for is when you're not in and somebody tries to deliver a package. Leica MK told me that they would phone or email before sending the camera back but this package just arrived - from a totally unrecognizable source. Fortunately the van driver phoned base at my request to find out who the sender was and I heard this voice say 'Leica' so I accepted my nicely refurbished D2. spylaw4 Posted November 14, 2007 Author Share #7  Posted November 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes - being in for delivery is always a problem. And it is also a pain when they won't even limit it to am or pm so on is stuck in all day and they arrive a 5 pm. If one dares go out they'll arrive while you're out. [/rant]  BTW I got an acknowledgement of receipt in the post this morning, together with "the offer" letter @ £895 inc full warranties. Quoting 5-8 weeks for the repair. Quoting 5-8 weeks for the repair.  For info, I just got £600 in a private sale of my 3+ years old D2 - it had had the heart transplant and was bundled with an Elpro, two filters and 3 extra batteries.  (whilst it was away in Solms I bought an M8...) spylaw4 Posted November 14, 2007 Author Share #9 Â Posted November 14, 2007 Good price John - I bet it was the Elpro, one filter and two batteries more than usual that did the trick!
elansprint72 Posted November 14, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted November 14, 2007 Brian, Â But at least when it comes back it should be good for a long time. Â I think we'll regret it from the very first moment if we part from our D2s; a lesson that I've learned, to my cost, with cars. It is one of those special instruments which are beyond price. I've thought about going out and getting something very fancy and expensive but whist that would not be a problem, would it do anything that I can't do with the D2 (within it's parameters)? I don't think so. Â Maybe a silent DR12, weighing a third of the R9 DMR, with 24-450 zoom might tempt me? Nah!
Guest flatfour Posted November 15, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted November 15, 2007 I agree Pete. The quirky D2 is difficult to improve upon in many areas even though the sum total is not quite right. Now if the M8 could have a Vario-Summicron then I might be tempted. The D2 lens must be one of the most exceptional lenses used as standard.

If only I could unscrew it and fit it onto my mini speed Graphic!!!!!  Attention Techno-Dweebs: I'm way ahead of you, so don't even bother!
