henning Posted November 8, 2007 Share #21 Posted November 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) True , none in stock , but he knew that I wasn't buying , he believed because they both came from the same source that they were identical Leslie They don't come from the same source. The Leica filters come from Japan. I have compared the Heliopan, B+W and Leica filters in 46mm size on 28 through 50mm lenses, and the differences are definitely there. For the 35 and 50 I am quite happy to use the Heliopan filters, as they are less expensive and slimmer, but for 28 and below the differences are increasingly apparent and I would only use the Leica filters. I've also compared Leica with Heliopan filters for the WATE, and the differences are dramatic. You can see the differences in the filter transmittances by laying them side by side on a sheet of white paper. As far as the 21<->24 thing goes; I've tried the 24 and while it is excellent, I prefer the 21 on the M8, especially since I also have the 28/2. I agree with other posters that the 21 draws very similarly to the 28/2. Henning

ken_tanaka Posted November 9, 2007 Share #22 Posted November 9, 2007 That's interesting, Jamie. Yes, indeed, I am using a Leica IR filter on my 21mm, the lens is Leica-coded and the M8 is set to detect the lens. It's been a mystery to me. The cyan cast on my 21's images appears mostly (but not exclusively) in 5600-5900K images and is heaviest on the right short edge of the image frame. I will revisit this puzzle in the next few weeks, as I need to use the 21 soon for a project. As this subject is outside of this thread I'll not elaborate further. Just a brief follow-up. It seems that the cyan edge casts with my 21mm f/2.8 Elmarit may be a thing of the past. I'm not sure if the new firmware had an impact on this issue. But I used the lens extensively yesterday in conditions that would have turned most scenes into looking like deep-sea photography. No problems. I'm positively delighted, as I really like this pricey, sharp little brick of a lens and would have been very sad to let it go. My particulars: Leica 55mm IR filter, lens is Leica-coded, M8 set for lens detection "On + UV/IR".
