grillo Posted November 4, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm thinking of getting a 50/2 lens. What are the differences between the Summicron 50 and Zeiss 50/2 Planar? Thanks.
Advertisement Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 Hi grillo, Take a look here 50/2 Zeiss vs Leica. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
orjanf Posted November 4, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 4, 2007 Sean Reid has an excellent review/comparison on his site. http://www.reidreviews.com
Dan States Posted November 4, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 4, 2007 I have the Planar now, and have owned Three of the current versions, plus the original Summicron. (I'm a 50 freak). The Planar has better flare resistance, and slightly less vignetting at full aperture. The Summicron is better constructed if you plan on letting your lenses tumble around together in the bag...they are better able to withstand impacts (especially impacts with my Zeiss lenses!) Either lens is as good as you could ever want, but the Zeiss is a massive bargin based on the outstanding performance.
gwelland Posted November 4, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 4, 2007 From a size perspective the planar is somewhat longer, particularly when you use the Zeiss hood. The lens cap is next to useless - I just use a hoodhat over the lens hood. Optically I've found it to be an excellent sharp contrasty lens with that produces nicely saturated images on both film and the M8. If it's critical you might want to compare the colour balance of the Zeiss glass vs other Leica lenses - I don't have a Leica 50 to compare mine against yet but I have noticed subtle colour balance differences between my other Leica and CV/Zeiss lenses. Vieri Posted November 5, 2007 Share #6 Posted November 5, 2007 Jose', both are fantastic, but as others said the Zeiss is a great bargain for the money. I am selling one in LN conditions in the Buy&Sell section here if you are interested. You can go wrong with either!
