fursan Posted November 2, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The most important complement for your leica M8 system. It is priceless, small, light, your equipment might not function properly without it, costs relatively little, will definitely improve your images... the unassuming, 2mm hex key!! Thanks to all those that helped me see the image. Taken with the unused 'cron 75 + M8. Whoopee!!

LichMD Posted November 2, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 2, 2007 Fahim, simply beautiful. I assume this was achieved through correction of focus using the hex key? Could you expound a bit?
lxlim Posted November 2, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 2, 2007 Very nice image! Dramatic and definitely not boring introduction to the effective use of the simple hex key. Alex

fursan Posted November 2, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted November 2, 2007 Thanks Jeff. I am grateful to forum members for their help in this. 1. I had back focus with most lenses. This was confirmed by a simple 3 pepsi can test. 2. Used my 90mm. turned the lens distance scale to infinity. 3. Looked at a star. the whole sky was full of stars. didn't know there were so many!! 4. Pointed to the moon. the images did not coincide in the vf. 2 moons? 5. looked at a building more about 5 km away. still the images didn't coincide. 6. time for the 2mm hex. get the lens out. hold the M8 in front of you. tilt it and you can see the hex opening. if you search for ' back focus', you should find a photo by Pascal showing you were to insert the hex key. 7. holding the M8 facing me I inserted the key in the focus adjustment opening. don't push gentle is the word. put a thumb to hold the opening, as it is spring loaded. turned it very little to my left ( i am looking at the M8 ). 8. lens back on. went outside. checked the same distant points.focus was still out, and in the same direction. 9. repeated # 7. 10. lens back. this time the image overlap went the other way ( it might not for you ) 11. repeated #7, this time in the other direction. 12. A few more times, and had the infinity images coincide. 13. surprisingly most lenses just fell into place, except the 35/1.4. 14. fiddled a little more and have got the 35/1.4 almost ( 97% ) ok. the 3% I know how much to adjust. The 75/2 has slight front focus at f2 only. 15. all in all, easy exercise..but was nervous so as not to damage anything. Don't use force and you should be ok. I hope this helps. let me know if I can be of further assistance. Regards. Fahim, simply beautiful. I assume this was achieved through correction of focus using the hex key? Could you expound a bit? I'll try to adjust it a bit, since my lenses are just a bit short of focusing on the moon correctly.
Guest WPalank Posted November 4, 2007 Share #10 Posted November 4, 2007 Fursan, Thank you for revisiting this very timely topic. I was in my basement testing several of my lenses a month before taking a trip to India. The bad news was that my 75, 50 and 35 lux lenses were all back focusing. The good news was that they were ALL back focusing. Following your suggestions, I took my 75 and on a nice clear day set it to infinity (eyepiece magnifier in) and focused on a pipe on a far away building and saw two of them. To modify your procedure a tad (I noticed you started twisting to the left before finally going right). If the lens is back focusing, you need to go right. On another note, I used a 2mm hex key I found in my tool box which didn't seem to work and was wondering if the cam had previously been stripped (not by me, my first time). So I ran down to the hardware store and bought a high quality one and it worked perfectly. Anyway, it truly was a piece of cake and now all lenses are focusing perfectly. Here's the link to the previous thread about this isssue with photos by Pascal.(A Forum search with the words "back focus" brings up about 20 pages of results.) http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/13933-new-backfocus-thread-solution.html Cheers,
