What is the increase from the previous price in the USA, ( $4795 to $5495 = 13.5% ?

How much has the value of the US dollar versus the Euro gone down in the year since the M8 was introduced? ( 1.272 to 1.445 = 13.6%)

It looks like the increase is very similar to the decrease in the value of the US dollar.

Sounds like it is time for an assembly line in the US.

Great idea!!!!!! Then then us Europeans can import/smuggle the (GW Bush jr. induced) shrivelling value US & CAN Leica M8 versions to Europe and make a killing :-)

Or would the made in Germany engineering suffer.....................

I don't think they would achieve anything building them in Canada. The Canadian dollar has actually gotten stronger against the Euro in the past year. It is up by about 5%.

Perhaps us Canadians should get a price decrease at our dealers :)

It went from $4795 to $4950 (sometime this summer) and now $5495.

For those of you who bought in countries that offer the M8 Passport Warranty (not here in the US) I'm curious to know what the US dollar equivalent sticker price is in your country and does this reflect the added warranty?

Actually it went from 4795 to 4950 now to 5495.

The only people this price increase affects are those that couldn't or wouldn't, for whatever reason, buy one at the original price and now find a need to own a Leica M8.

Lens prices are going up also.

Here in Vancouver Leo's has it at $5495 CDN. I guess they ordered lots of stock before the price increase!

Thanks, RichC. I guess $5800 isn't so bad if it comes with a one year no-fault Passport warranty in addition to the 2 year warranty, given the new US price of $5495. But assume you would have to ship the camera back to the UK dealer so they would (if the dealer is willing to help you out) pass it on to Leica UK for the Passport warranty.

Putting aside matters of principle, i.e. that one must pay a huge premium today for the same digital camera compared to a year ago whilst the otherwise-universal paradigm in digital photography is that cameras decrease in price over time, if the amount an M8 has increased prices it out of someone's reach, then a strong argument could be raised that it might've been more of an extravagance than they ought to have considered even at the original price. There are probably more residual M8 sales yet to come than had there not been the scandals and bad publicity because a number of people put off buying until issues were sorted, but Leica has probably produced and sold more M8s heretofore than they will from here on.

For those looking - Harry's Pro Shop here in Toronto still has it's price set at $4999.99 CAD - that is not scheduled to change according to the owner.

That said, I've decided to hold off on purchasing an M8 for the time being - what I would like to know is why is there a price increase? Is demand that great?

Basing my experience on all digital bodies - the price usually dips a bit as the life cycle of the body goes forward. I'm well aware that there is no other Leica M digital so this is the "only game in town" but I still don't understand where Leica's head is at.

Cheers

Dave

This is a dollar value adjustment. While demand is high there is no point in Leica giving away margin. For them it is a question of assessing sales versus price at a moving figure. I would think sales elsewhere in the world particuarly in the far east will more than make up any shortfall in US sales.
