msendin Posted October 30, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) First want to say hello to the forum as a newcomer and hope my english does not confuses everybody (including myself) sometimes. Just wanted please your opinion as if a new setting for "Non Coded Lenses + IR/UV filter" would just be a useless thing or not. As it seems Leica refuses to include in future firmware releases a way of introducing the focal lenght in use. It also seems that not every Leica lense will be coded by them, specially old ones. Lets not even mention the nice CV lenses arround. As far as I understand, the M8 software corrects certain artifacts with an IR filter and a coded lense. Would it be of any benefit a new setting like "Lense code off + IR/UV" ? Perhaps not the best technical solution, but better than anything? Thanks and I hope to continue meeting you at this forum. marknorton Posted October 30, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 30, 2007 Without a knowledge of the lens type in use, the camera cannot sensibly make the image enhancements to correct for sensor and filter red vignetting. We've discussed here before whether Leica should provide a menu from which to select one of the supported lenses to approximate to the lens in use or whether the new Summarits are Leica's response to the need for a range of lenses which will compete more effectively with lenses from Zeiss and CV. There are arguments whether providing such a menu will increase camera sales at the expense of lens sales or whether it's right to retain the competitive and usability advantage which coding offers. My own view is that an M8-ready lens should have a filter on the front and a code on the back.
sean_reid Posted October 31, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 31, 2007 A general correction wouldn't work. It really needs to be specific to focal length, maximum lens aperture, etc. So, until and unless Leica moves forward with a lens selection menu, the options are: 1) Work with a coded Leica lens 2) Hand code 3) Use Cornerfix. A lens selection menu needn't have any usability effect for M8 photographers who choose not to use it. Some feel that such a menu would hurt Leica lens sales. Others feel that it would help camera sales and, perhaps, have very little effect on Leica lens sales. Leica lenses, of course, have sold for decades because of their build quality and peformance, not because of any exclusive coding. To be sure, coded lenses will always be faster and more convenient to use than a menu system would be. But I favor giving the photographer the choice of using either. The various positions on, and opinions about, this issue have been discussed at great length on the forum. A search should lead to the relevant threads but the discussion is, of course, only discussion. Only Leica can decide whether or not to put the menu system into production firmware. Cheers, Sean
