bradreiman Posted October 30, 2007 Share #21 Posted October 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) just to balance the thread and calm the nerves i'll relate my experience...i dropped my m8 about 6 feet from the top of my car directly onto asphalt. the camera was wearing a noctilux at that time. the camera and lens came through with absolutely no internal damage but received a good, deep ding along the stage-left top rim of the top panel. it now has an inch of brass showing where there was previously black anodization. there is also a couple of dings around the black ring under/around the shutter release button. the camera took a picture when it it the ground as well but the composition was to artsy for my taste. sorry yours didn't make it through Erl. ps- i have been in your lovely country for about a week and am truly enjoying it. what a fantastic place....Brad
Advertisement Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Hi bradreiman, Take a look here Eeek! M8 RF broken. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest tummydoc Posted October 30, 2007 Share #22 Posted October 30, 2007 IMHO it's somewhere between scandalous and disgusting that Leica-USA has chosen not to offer Passport on the M8. If I dropped mine and it needed a new rangefinder, I would call Sherry Krauter or Don Goldberg and ask them if they would care to do the job, since it isn't a digital-electronic thing. Even if the cost was the same I'd rather they got the money than Leica in that case.
sean_reid Posted October 30, 2007 Share #23 Posted October 30, 2007 Hi Earl, First of all, I'm sorry to hear about this. It could happen to any of us. I don't think the rangefinder in the M8 is any more delicate than is the unit in the M7, etc. It would be interesting to know, however, what in the mechanism needs replacement rather than adjustment. It seems reasonable, to me, for you to ask for the old parts, if only to satisfy your curiosity. Cheers, Sean

Cheers, Sean Not sure it is done all the time but I just got a 135/2.8 Eyed Elmarit back from Solms (yes it was expensive to have repaired) that need the eyes adjusted for verticle alignment and they did a bunch of other stuff that was not ask for but was needed to bring the lens back to specs. In any event when I got it back it had a second set of eyes included in the box. Not sure if the extra eyes were the original and they couldn't adjust them or it was a mistake. I suspect (for the price I paid) that they changed out the eyes to a more current version and included the originals when sent back. So Leica AG might be in the habbit of including old parts when shipping unit back.
FastFashnReloaded Posted October 30, 2007 Share #25 Posted October 30, 2007 ........... this is not the point, I am amazed with the fragility of the inners of the camera, better buy a tank to protect the camera. Hope it all works out but it still is unacceptable It's a camera, not a Chevy. It's full of glass - real glass, not that plastic junk that comes in the OVF of a Canon G9. Don't drop it. rob_x2004 Posted October 30, 2007 Share #27 Posted October 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am waiting for the mathematicians to chime in with thesis of acceptability because probability that if it was built touger you would have dropped it from higher. Or the physicists who said well I can drop it twenty six and three quarter inches without a problem. Its only that last quarter inch Leica has to address. Take it that the bank loans manager knows all about it and hope it isnt hte solicitor who has to tell the better half. Erl you must be geting sick of people comparing your twelve grands worth of kit with a disposable point and shoot.
erl Posted October 30, 2007 Author Share #28 Posted October 30, 2007 To those offereing sympathy, thank you. Believe it or not, it does make me feel better. Just talking about it helps. I should declare that I have a sign on my forehead that says "survivor". I just keep going because I don't fancy the alternative. Now, I just have to find a way to explain to 'her' that it is her superannuation I am using to 'fix' the predicament. You see, the easy way out ain't easy at all! I will contact the Australian importer (who is handing the arrangements for me) and ask if it is reasonable to request the return of the replaced RF.
