It's not only Leica who recall cameras...

Far be it from me to show a little Schadenfreude or gloat over another company's misfortunes. I merely note that Canon in the UK are reportedly recalling the unsold EOS 1D III cameras because of an autofocus problem which firmware changes have failed to fix.

That will wipe the smile off the face of those self-satisfied Canon reps... :D

Ed, my bad. but that was in times long gone by and forgotten. we have moved on to much more exciting findings. along with my vision, my memory seems

to be failing. it must be this focus thing!

best.

Leica recalled all M8's that were on dealer shelves at the end of November and asked ALL M8 buyers to send in there cameras for a fix. If that isn't a recall I don't know what is.

The irony is quite amusing. Canon recall their cameras to fix an auto focus problem and Leica charge roughly the same amount of money for a camera that has no auto focus to fix.

The irony I find amusing is that after a full year of production, with all the glitches and the fixes or lack thereof well-known, people who've decided against buying an M8 still can't resist the urge to bash the camera, the company, and by association, all those who do own an M8.

Minor glitch in very sophisticated system a lot of users wouldnt find. But Canon recognise they cant afford to have something out there that isnt right....Whereas....

So let's see.... Galbraith reported the AF problems in the 1D3 in mid-June, and in mid-October Canon owns up to them and offers a fix (4 months).

WHEREAS... This forum finds the M8's banding issue at the beginning of Nov. 2006, and by the END of Nov. 2006 Leica has owned up to the problem, pulled back the unsold stock for upgrading, and offered the fix for cameras already sold. (<1 month).

For a camera marketed as the photojournalists' and sports photographers' dream camera with 10 fps - an inability to follow-focus in 80% of the frames is hardly a "minor" glitch. One only needs to read the posts from pros who went back to their 1D2s - or even to 30Ds - because at least with those cameras the subject stayed sharp...

(BTW - Galbraith points out that Canon is not REQUIRING that cameras be sent in for upgrades, therefore he does not count it as a "recall". The same would apply to the M8 - a free fix was available for those who wanted it, but unlike exploding batteries or igniting windshield-wiper motors or toddler-poisoning paints, neither the M8 nor the 1D3 bugs are actually hazardous (except to owners with high blood pressure), and therefore a return for repair or upgrade is/was not forced on the owners. A fine legal point, perhaps...)

If I recall a number of people found focus lock and predictive didnt work well in the heat. It wasnt only Galbraith. I am not sure focus was ever an issue. It was predictive AF to do with tracking, or holding when shutter button was depressed..it still wanted to search. Have a look at some of the frames that failed...if that is what you call it.

This forum didnt disover anything. Leica knew about their issues from the start. Who was that other reviewer that tried to justify himself and come clean. Reichman or something sounds like. Leica decided it wasnt as big an issue as it was. Who knows the reason or logic. It doesnt matter. By the way they didnt tell a number of the large and respected dealers either. Some were riled.

A niche market wasnt satisfied with the canon...M8 issues effect everyone.

I think two things are not quite right in that answer, Rob:

first of all, don't make excuses for Canon. The camera didn't work for its mission critical situation, and needed to be fixed. There is no excuse for never owning up to the problem until four months later, a fix is offered, with no apology. We got a personally signed letter of apology from Leica's CEO. Let's see Canon even say "sorry, it was our fault".

Secondly, do you have numbers for the size of that niche? This could potentially affect a *lot* of shooters, maybe even a majority, since moving targets in daylight is this particular camera's raison d'etre. Sure, there may be a lot of moms and pops with money who buy such a thing without having a clue, but the camera is primarily intended for moving sports. The 10 fps is not for smiling babies or photo journalism. If you have numbers, fine, but if you don't, I wouldn't call it a niche. It is the bullseye of the market for that camera.

All things Canon are not shit, but some are. The 1D3 was unusable for its intended purpose as shipped, and Canon doesn't even apologise. It took them four months to even announce that they would fix it.
