wparsonsgisnet Posted August 22, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 22, 2006 Stuart, Thanks for the article. FYI, I have not been depending on CD's or DVD's for my primary backup. I use multiple on-line, external disks. Regards, Bill
wparsonsgisnet Posted August 22, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 22, 2006 Stuart, Reply number 3. Makes you wonder if anyone is worried about media life. I have now read the material you sent in detail and plan to test my CD's and DVD's in the future. Thanks again, Bill
stumac Posted August 22, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted August 22, 2006 Bill, Having recently gone through some 1000's of photos and slides of my late parents spanning 60 years, I have reached the conclusion that long term storage perhaps is not so important. Photos of places I know and people I dont, represent their memories only and are of little significance to anyone else. Looking at my own, I think the same applies. wparsonsgisnet Posted August 22, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 22, 2006 Stuart, Well, I certainly wouldn't claim to have any Ansel-quality photos in my pix, but I have clients who ask for things on CD or DVD. It's very embarrassing when the media craps out. I know what to expect from prints: 1. b/w = forever (so far) 2. color a. standard color print = up to 10 years or so b. chrome = 35 - 50 years, protected c. digital = 50 to 100 years, protected and I know b/w negs will last the same forever as prints, above. So, if the print is going to self-destruct (either by itself or thru abuse from the client, I have to be prepared to replace it. Therefore the digital neg has to be there. Consequently the concern for archival quality -- apparently not to be found with CD or DVD media. As I mentioned above, I keep multiple, online copies of my digital negs.
