Devaprem Posted February 20, 2023 Share #1  Posted February 20, 2023 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) My lens is at Leica in Germany at the moment, being examined for what I thought might scratches. Having used a UV filter constantly, I struggled to think how those would have occurred. In turns out, however, that they  lens coating defects. Leica say the following:
"The minimal coating defects have no influence on the image quality and can therefore remain. A repair or replacement of the optic elements is not possible. As an alternative, we are offering the replacement of the device" They also say that my lens is therefore working within tolerance . They are offering a replacement lens for £425. I've asked them if this would be a new or used lens and am waiting for their reply.  I've attached a photo of the two defects and would welcome any thoughts to comments on what Leica say and the options they've given me. Thanks in advance.   Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! wda Posted February 20, 2023 Share #2 Â Posted February 20, 2023 Unless you can detect impaired optical performance, I would accept Leica's verdict and keep your lens. It is a superb lens.

wda Posted February 20, 2023 Share #4  Posted February 20, 2023 I have noticed such slight impairments in the past. They do not affect image performance.

straycat23 Posted March 26, 2023 Share #7  Posted March 26, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've used Leica products for at least 50 years. If there are manufacturing defects in the coating, Leica should either fix or offer a free replacement, especially if it is bothering the customer. I am assuming this lens is under warranty still. This is just good business. There are rumors that the TL lens under the Leica name are not made by Leica and are made by an undisclosed source in Japan. They are apparently not made by Sigma or Panasonic. I'm not sure what Country of Origin Sigma is now, but Panasonic is China. I saw 'Made in China' embossed on the back of the lens  housing of a Lumix TL lens. Leica does not print made in Germany anymore, that I have seen, on any TL lenses. Leica still makes the vast majority of their cameras in Germany.
Devaprem Posted March 26, 2023 Author Share #8 Â Posted March 26, 2023 Thanks for your comments and interesting information. My lens was out of warranty but, after some discussion, Leica replaced it for no charge. Full marks to them for excellent service. Also, Leica Mayfair were very helpful too.
