johnfriar Posted October 27, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 27, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I notice that when I add some meta data to an M8 dng file in Lightroom (1.2), and then save the meta data to the file, the file size goes from 10Mb to under 5Mb. This indicates to me that Lightroom is running the lossless (hopefully) compression algorithm in the same way as if I exported a file in dng format. Given that no new files are created and the raw dng files are more than halved in size, could I simply add some meta data (a single property would do) to all my files and thus halve my disk space usage? Are there any downsides to this? Cheers, John

johnfriar Posted October 31, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted October 31, 2007 LR uses Huffman encoding to losslessly compress your DNG files. I understand that LR uses Huffman encoding when exporting DNG files. What I was not aware of, and think is odd, is that LR compresses an existing (M8) DNG file when simply adding some meta data. Given the fact that it does this, I think that one could add some meta data (say copyright information) at import time and get the immediate benefits of lossless compression. The only drawback I can see is the extended import time (due to the compression) and, possibly, extended time it takes to view an image. I'm wondering if there are any other downsides to doing this.
