The Widest For M8

There was serious cyan drift occurred with my first tryout with CV 12mm Ultra Wide-Heliar lens despite that I used Leica UV-IR Cut filter mounted to a self-made filter holder. I suspected two things for the cause: 1) Without coding the lens (or the mount ring in this case) I did not trigger the firmware for the correction; 2) The UV-IR Cut filter slightly blocked and caused color shift on two sides. So I ordered J. Milich’s LTM8 adapter, then coded the lens as WATE with default on 16mm. I also ordered CV E77 filter adapter as well as B+W E77 SLIM 486 UV IR CUT MRC filter from a camera shop in Hong Kong. After second tryout shooting with the new setup when I sat in front of my PC working through the DNG conversion, I was totally overwhelmed by the fabulous result: even illumination, excellent color clarity and NO CYAN DRIFT. See these photos of performance below. I want to thank Milich’s nice work of adapter that makes the lens so desirable for M8. Hope you would enjoy the same as I do with this little gem.:)

The gear: JM’s adapter with 6-bit recesses, CV E77 filter adapter and B+W E77 SLIM 486 UV IR CUT MRC filter

Interesting that the cyan correction for the 16mm WATE would be "fabulous" for both the 12mm and 15mm C/V lenses, and in particular with the B+W 486 vs the Leica-labelled filter. Previously I had read that Cornerfix was the only means of successfully eliminating cyan drift from the 12mm and that Leica-labelled filters were by far best on wide and ultra-wide.

If I recall correctly, Sean's sample pix indicate that the results of using a Leica-branded IR-cut filter vs the B-W are somewhat mixed.

Felix, I know you already have the filter and adapter, but Milich also makes an adapter for this lens that uses a very much smaller filter and encloses the whole assembly, thereby keeping dust out.

It's a beautiful device, totally fitting for a fancy-schmancy camera like a Leica (couldn't resist that last). The side benefit of using it is that you won't have this big piece of glass staring at people and attracting attention to the camera.

Are those all taken with the 12mm/B+W 486 and coded as the WATE? I see cyan corners in some of them, ie. the skyline shot, and maybe the lobby shot. At least I think so. I also had occasional trouble with my 35 Lux Asph and B+W filter, which was eventually cured by switching to a Leica filter. I don't know if that would help here. Could you shoot a shot outdoor with the entire sky visible, at f/5.6?

I just got my copy of the cv12 and just yesterday was in John Milich's machine shop in the Brooklyn Navy yard picking up a filter holder and ltm mount.

John took the time to show me the shop and he was running some ltm mounts on the milling machine at the time, and he explained to me the great reaction he has had to the work he is doing. Best part of my day!

As has been reported, with the cv12 coded as WATE 16mm, the leica filter in the jm holder, you still get cyan corners that are obvious on neutral subjects.

Just for giggles, I tried the lens vignetting correction tool in Lightroom, and if you max it out, +100 amount and 0 Midpoint, you can clean up 99% of it like that. I am not sure how that would look on an actual subject, I was just testing a white foamcore panel shot. fortunately the world is not a white wall...

I got the lens to fill out my kit to shoot a recording studio next week, I will try to post the results.

I did do some tests with the lens unfiltered and uncoded, and the problem for me was the colour profiles in Lr are for filtered lenses, so you get a lot of pink everywhere. And the magenta textiles. Since this was going to be used to shoot an interior likely to have synthetic panels on the wall I thought better of it and sprung for the filter/holder combo. I am glad I did, it looks "hugely" impressive yet takes up no space.

Hi Carsten:

As promised I took this shot today with most coverage on sky (much hazy unfortunately) in wide open. Now it shows on the right hand side very fainted color shift. But this is still far better than the result I got before without the JM’s adapter and coding as WATE. I am happy for now, and will try other options to optimize the performance of the lens, and I will also look forward to seeing Robert’s posting of his new CV12.

The other two shots were also taken today, and they appear to be free of color shift at corners. My conclusion in short: This ultra-wide lens is in general very useful for M8 when very wide scene is required. A bit extra effort can be done to optimize the best color results and illumination. As to the cost, everything adding up (lens, filter holder, filter & JM adapter) cost me only US$940, which is much less than a current Summicron-M 50mm.

Is there any way to put a lens cap over the CV 12mm lens with your adapter in place?
