MindsEye Posted October 25, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a vague recollection that some folks had issues using chrome mount UV/IR filters. Reflections causing flare related problems perhaps? Anyone? I'm only asking because I just received a B+W UV/IR filter E43 for my Zeiss 35 ZM which was supposed to be in the black mount but arrived in the chrome mount (designation "Digi Pro") I don't want to break the seal on the box if I'm going to return it. If it is only cosmetic then I'll consider keeping it since it could be a pain to return it. Thanks!

Julius Bjornsson Posted October 25, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 25, 2007 I have two chrome/silver Leica filters, one for a CV 35 mm and the other on the 90 mm Elmarit - M. , and I have not seen any reflections or anomalies that I can trace to the filters. But this is only my subjective experience, no scientific or systematic testing so far. I do not think Leica would be producing these filters if there was a danger of reflections or any problems like this. Now the BW filter might be otherwise, but that I cannot say anything about. Baxter Posted October 26, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 26, 2007 You will have no problem with getting this filter onto the lens. Leica use a smaller pitch for the 43mm thread than Zeiss and B+W. This is irrespective of whether silver or black finish. I have a 43mm Leica filter on the Zeiss ZM f2 50mm lens. I've had to jam it on after 1/2 turn or so - this isn't as bad as it seems...! No problems in 4 months, has come off just once. My filters are in silver and have had no issues with reflection.
MindsEye Posted October 30, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted October 30, 2007 I am a collec†or of chrome/silver lenses and thvVus the silver filters. I have had no (repeat no!) issues with reflections of my knowldede. YMMV Woody Spedden My filters are in silver and have had no issues with reflection Guess I won't worry but it would be interesting at some point to do a comparison of black vs chrome since the inside of the chrome filter mounts are definitely reflective and that shiny surface is only a few mm from the front element. Physics would kind of dictate that some light would be reflected and bounce into the lens. No offense to Leica but I wouldn't necessarily take it for granted that they've tested it. Interestingly my B+W 486 mount is blackened below the glass but still chrome above/in front of the glass. If you read B+Ws description they make their "Digi Pro" line of filters to cosmetically match chrome P&S cameras. I wonder how many P&S users buy UV/IR filters? Of course if you're using a hood reflections off the mount shouldn't be an issue but without..?? Thank you all for your feedback. Appreciate it.
