Power (battery) management...

I'm wondering how other members conserve power on their M8s. Do you switch on and off again after capturing an image, or do you use the auto-off feature? And if the latter, roughly how long (or how many exposures) do you find that you can use the M8 before the battery runs low?

Also, have any third-party batteries been introduced? If so, how does their performance compare?

Thank in advance.

Tony, when in photo mode, Ieave the M8 on all the time, and also have review enabled.

I have 4 Leica batteries and carry them with the camera. This is good for more than 12 hours. I do not use 3rd party batteries, tho some do.

Also, I swap batteries when the indicator shows the last bar (1/3). I found that the M8 behaved in an odd fashion when in this low-power indication mode.

I use the Auto-Off feature and have it set to the default 5 minutes.

I also turn it off when I know I won't be using it for a while and always turn it off when I put it in the bag.

I have 2 aftermarket batteries. Both of them do the same thing. If you run them down at all, less then the full 3 bars on the camera battery meter, and then put them in the charger when it's done they only show 1 bar on the camera meter. You have to fully DRAIN them before you recharge, then they will show the full 3 bars on the camera meter. I am presently using only the after market batteries hoping they will DIE so I can dispose of them and then I'll never buy a aftermarket battery. I also have 4 real Leica M8 batteries. Don't know for sure but it seems that the AM batteries don't last as long and are a real PITA.

I suggest you skip the aftermarket batteries.

My experience agrees completely with this, the M8 does not communicate well with third party batteries. I haven't noticed any difference in performance .

If you don't drain them before recharging they will show empty after re-charge but they will still be fully charged and work for the normal amount of time before the camera shuts down.

during a trip to Everest Base Camp last may, I brought along with me two Leica batteries for my M8. With the entire trekking period expected to last for 16 days, I decided to shut off the auto review on the m8 to make the battery last longer, considering that i have only one spare battery in reserve. Also, I turned off the camera when not using it. To my surprise, I didn't have to use the spare battery at all. After taking almost a thousand raw pics, my original battery was still three-fourths in power capacity when i got back to katmandu after 16 days.
