Help with off-camera flash: Metz and DMR

Hi--

Is there any cable from Leica (or Metz) that will let me mount a dedicated flash on a bracket?

I'm loving my R9/ DMR (and glad Andy got his troubles ironed out).

An unexpected pleasure has been using Metz flashes again--I use the 54MZ with the SCA 2002 adaptor. The flash is so good in Automatic mode, and so easy to use in terms of controls, etc.., that I don't even miss TTL flash.

But here's a question no-one has been able to answer, so I hope someone here knows. I want to use the flash on a bracket (get it up and off the camera) and I haven't been able to find either

1) a Leica hotshoe to hotshoe mount, or

2) Metz dedicated "off camera" cable that will work with the 54MZ.

I'd prefer the Leica to Leica hotshoe (with a standard screw mount on the female end), but I'll take any solution I can find.

Thanks!

Jamie

SCA 307A for SCA off-camera operation (No.: 0 0009307 3)

The coil cord SCA307A was made for the connection between adapters of system SCA300 to compact flash units mounted on a bracket. It can be stretched on 90cm (3feet).

The above was copied from the Metz web site and it might be what you are seeking.

For the Metz 54 MZ series flash and Leica R9, a SCA 3000 series adapter is used not the old 300 series (although they will work but with less features).

What you want is a "Metz SCA 3008A Connecting Cable".

This unit uses the SCA adapter now on your flash and mounts atop the Leica R8/9 and provides an off the camera SCA base on which to mount your flash with a 3-4 foot coiled extension cable. The flash when mounted on the extension base is secured by a standard "hot shoe" mount.

From the Metz manual . . . "Data transmission between the SCA adapter and mecablitz is retained. The dedicated functions are not restricted."

Power supply for the adapter is by 4 AAA batteries and is ONLY for the Auto Focus measuring beam (which of course, Leica does not use).

This adapter may be used with the 32, 40, 44, 54, 70 and 50 series flash units since the camera specific SCA adapter base is interchanged between the flash and the adapter when in use.

You are probably using the SCA 3501 or 3502 adapter. Just remove it from the base of your 54MZ and re-mount the flash on the extended base. The 3008 can also be used totally off camera if fixed with the SCA 3082 Slave adapter.

Ah! the wonders of the modular SCA system now starts to make some sense - versatility!

Jamie:

Yes, both the 307A and the 3008A will work with the 54MZ flash and the R8. The determining difference in choosing, is the present SCA adapter you have fixed to your 54MZ 3 or 4. The Metz 54MZ series will function with either the 300 or 3000 series SCA adapter.

Since you must remove the adapter from the bottom of your flash and re-attach it to the off camera unit, the SCA adapter you now own will determine which off camera extension you should buy.

If you are using a 300 series SCA on your 54MZ then the 307A is correct.

However, I would assume that you purchased the flash and appropriate adapter within the last few years and you were likely given a 3000 series SCA adapter. If this is the case, you must choose the 3008A. The 3008A is designed to only be compatible with the 3000 series of SCA adapters.

Look on the side of the SCA adapter now on your 54MZ. It should say "SCA" followed by a number. If that number is 3 digits, you have a 300 series and if 4 digits a 3000 series.

Also - here is the Metz page for such assessories. It also shows some "in line" extension cords that may be of interest to you.

Best of luck!

Thom
