Guy ! Jack! good to see you guys getting into heavy duty PP work................. reality caper was over rated......turning photos into new "realities" is the way to go...... see the camera is now number two......the new order as seen here computer> camera> and shutter operator if required

 

LOL yes Imants it is fun to play in the PS stuff, i really enjoyed watching everyone doing HDR's and selections and such. Fun to teach also, landscape really lends itself to HDR the shots from the floor of Yosemite which is refered to Valley View with El Cap is a nasty contrast difference and really need to work the image and HDR type work really can help in these situations. My shot was a day earlier than the others and extremely early in the morning but I had fog to deal with so a little different.

 

Here is my final version which we showed to the students and Jack also had some nice winners. Photoshop can be a blast i agree.

 

I shot this with the M8 and a Zeiss 15mm 2.8 which i was playing with and about F8 and 2 to 4 seconds on the orginal images

Everyone

I am posting just a few shots to show what I was able to get. Others did considerably better in many of the compositions so some good images will be showing up i am sure.

Great shots! I like how the Sunset shot turned out. Nice and clean.

 

Would you post your shot of the valley floor w/ the roots in the lower left corner? The colors in that one are just incredible.

Nice shot Guy..how do you like the Zeis lens vs the cv15

 

At F8 and F11 pretty darn equal but at 5.6 and up the Zeiss wins the battle. If you need the speed the Zeiss will win and frankly the CV 12mm has less CA than any of them. Go figure

 

What we really need is a LEICA 14mm 3.5 . Leica needs to hit this area with a rectilinear prime and i could not get the money out of my pocket fast enough. LOL

Just looking at the images , I wonder if some of the images have sacrificed a bit of quality in using HDR. Some parts seem to be washed out and this in turn seems to make the image lose some of its dynamics visually and creating a heavy atmosphere. l

Not all images posted are HDR either but when you are faced with a image situation like this with the lighting there is almost no choice but to jump into HDR and for many folks they never even dealt with doing one. Frankly it is not as easy as sticking two images together, there is a lot of trial and error in getting it correctly. Images like this posted usually would wind up in the G file but if properly done at shooting time you can get a workable image. This is what people are fighting. Extremely tough image to deal with and a range that no camera on the planet could handle film , digital or otherwise.

Guy: Excellent point on the range we were dealing with, and that image shows it well. I measured almost 15 stops of difference between the sky and the dark foreground elements on that first morning. We always hope for more cloud cover to knock down the brightness range like we got on the second morning.

 

Here is my version of that view on the day with cloud cover:

Somebody asked me if I thought it would look better shot with "Velvia." First off, we'd have never been able to get this shot with Velvia! We could have maybe stacked a 3 stop and a 2 stop Split ND filter together to hold back the sky, but then the monoliths in the background would be nothing but dark silhouettes without any detail. HOWEVERBUT, here is the above image with a Velvia curve applied to it in post just for fun:

This was a shot I took last year using a 2 stop ND grad. Somebody needs to invent a ND grad that fits the V shape of mountains like this and the Tunnel View shots.
