I am a brand new Leica user.  Just bought a Q2 (Reporter Edition.)

I intend to use this camera for (among other things,) mountaineering and climbing photography, backcountry skiing, trekking, etc.

I need a rugged case to protect the camera from the inevitable scratches, bangs and smacks that are inherent in outdoor sports.

Can anyone suggest a good case/carrying system that will provide some protection while being active outdoors?

Ideally, it should provide easy access to the camera and be able to be clipped to a backpack.

Doesn’t the Reporter Edition have a Kevlar skin ? 😂

I guess it depends on what type of case you’re looking for. Are you looking for an EverReady  style case that’s on the camera ( with strap )and you fold down the top? I’ve only been able to find generic ones. There are several cases out there which are only a half case that covers the bottom. Leica has one, LIM’S , etc. but that still doesn’t protect the lens or the top of the camera.

I‘d probably get a pelican case for transit and a capture clip from peak design for out in the field while using the camera. There are screen protectors and half cases you could use but in this kind of environment the occasional bump or scratch is probably inevitable.

For out of case use, I switched to a cheap haoge** hood, added a thumb grip and tripod compatible base plate.

They all serve a primary purpose, and also all add some extra material (protrusions) to the outside of the camera that will take impact on behalf of the camera.

**due to pain of swapping filters with stock hood, if you don’t use filters then it’s fine for protection.

Another option (if you have space with the rest of the gear you‘re wearing) would be to use a hippack. On the Mountainbike I use the evoc pro 3L which can hold a Canon R5 with 70-200/4. so should have room for a Q2 and some accessories.

Probably will need some trial and error to find what fits your needs.  For day hikes and general use, I have found a half case, after-market lens hood and screen protector are sufficient.  I like to wear my camera sling-style and that works for me.

For carrying second camera and other things, a sling bag or backpack would be my choice.  Next hike with a backpack, I will use the PD capture clip for quick access.

If you are after a half-case I found Lim's half case excellent. It is sturdy (the handgrip and the base plate are metal), good looking, affordable and has its own handgrip (as opposed to the Leica option - whereby you either buy a hand grip OR a half case.)

The OP wrote this^^^.

A half case????? I wouldn't even think about it! Neoprene sounds a good option. Personally I would go to a good general purpose camera store and try all the waterproof pouches with belt or backpack attachments, especially those that can be well-sealed against dust and water, opened one-handed, and have few dangly bits to catch on things, like extra straps or long draw cords. Tamrac, LowePro, Crumpler...... In the UK I'd head for Wex or CameraWorld.

This is my solution:

Artisan and Artist half case.

Optech neoprene case.

Braided strap.

Doesn't increase the size much, but provides a fair amount of padding.

Easy to get to when needed.

Be careful with the Neopren, i allready got some Bad experience with rocks and neopren since the q housing is solid it can easily beak through the Neopren when contact happens... I take the q2 on motorcycle and mountainhiking Trips. It can Happen realy fast that you bang the camera to a Rock, even with little/ soft contact... My solution is the lowepro apex 100 aw, has even a rain Cover. But I never use Straps and always have the lens hood, grip and thumb grip attached. It is a really tight fit for the lowepro bag, it will widen a bit ober time. Straps are often in the way in tricky conditions + uncontrollable swinging with Chance of contact.

But you can attach it on your breast strap, if you dont mind the size--> fast acces, rain Cover and no swinging around like on a strap. (Not recommended while climbing in really dificult places)

Hi.. Any particular reason you're NOT using a clear filter when you're taking your camera on adventures? My camera has never really been in much danger, but I certainly don't baby it (it's usually across my body or thrown in a backpack depending on what I'm doing), and having the stock lens hood on plus this clear filter gives me peace of mind.

It has a filter on it.  I put the filter on the minute after I took the camera out of the box.
