friends, if i am buying leica digital camera I need your suggestions to help me to choose by suggesting which model is better in terms of features and picture quality leica digilux 3 or leica v-lux 1.

are lens interchangeable in leica v-lux 1 like leica digilux 3

That's quite an odd comparison....Full frame DSLRs versus the digilux 3 or vlux 1.

The Canon and Nikon should be compared between themselves...and that is a debateable subject that will probably boil down to which lens system you prefer.

The V-lux 1 is not an interchangeable lens. But it is a terrific zoom that is quite impressive.

The digilux 3 is a nice way to get into using Leica interchangeable optics.

I suppose a question for you is what is more important...having a "Leica" or having full frame ability. Because that will be one of the obvious factors to consider with the cameras you mention.

my dear friend thanks for reply can you tell me that what is a full frame ability? what do you mean by that? is Leica not a full frame ability camera? all I want to buy the best digital camera whether it is Leica or Canon or Nikon does not matter to me. Only the best matters to me as I want to have the best digital camera

LOL.. ya gotta be kidding..?

Based on your stellar knowledge of cameras I see two compelling options.

First and probably the most interesting. The new Hassleblad digital camera body, with a tastefully chosen selection of world class lenses, I suggest getting a couple of short ones and maybe one longer which also will comfortably fit in a carry-on size camera bag.

As a alternative if this does seem a tad too heavy for snapshots around the house and at parties with friends where really the red dot is the most important for big smiles.... Clearly the V-lux 1 is the pre-eminent choice - though I am tempted to suggest as a alternative the new Canon G9 with 12 megapix, this may be a very nice alternative also with a dial button for selecting either P or automatic.

All of these cameras comes with the expected luxury camera options such as handmade soft-enamel logo badges and seriously big time name recognition... though in all fairness, the Hassleblad do have a much bigger name badge.

I don't think that anyone can help you. What you've said is that you know nothing about photography or cameras but that you want the best. That indicates just consumerism, which is not what 99.9% of this forum is about. Perhaps you should buy what is the most expensive. BTW, there is no such thing as the best camera.

Hi, I can understand where you are coming from to a degree. There is something magical about Leica ownership, just as there is about Ferrari, Rolex, Prada etc etc. Things made with passion. And it is not until you start shooting with a Leica that you will see that the photos just look different to the 'text book' Canon. Same feeling when you drive a Ferrari. Not that robotic drive you get from a Porsche. Something very special about the way it handles and sounds.

I have always loved taking photos and have had many fine cameras. My first Digital camera was a digilux 2. I now have a digilux 3. Some of my close friends have also got into photography and they are using top Nikon and Canon. We all go out for walks taking pics now and then. I am the least experienced, but some of my images are GREAT! (I think so anyway) they look very different to the canon and nikon. I have to say that the nikon come in a close second. We have all stood and take a photo of the same thing just to compare. Silly things like a can of polish (attached) I love the way the Leica renders the photo. Maybe it is the lens.

Go with the Digilux 3 and get some R lenses. (only my lowly opinion of course)

You should first buy some books.

Buy a simple guide to digital photography.

Perhaps get a guide dedicated to digital SLR cameras.

Get a guide for the Leica systems.

Get yourself an opinion of what you want.

Get in touch with the actual cameras, go to a photostore or go to a Photographic equipment fair.

I have used many different cameras.

I started off with relatively inexpensive PAS (point and shoot) (it was only film back then)

Got a pretty good Fuji SLR but not interchangable lenses.

After using the Fuji for maybe 3 or 4 years I took the big step and got an old Canon EOS-1 (still film)

Continued with Canon for 5 years, but also accompanied the Canon system with Mamiya 645 system and Hasselblad.

It took me a long time to find the cameras that will most likely be my soul-mates. The Leica M system. Started with an M6 (film), got a Epson RD-1 (digital) and currently I have M8 and the M2.

If you want the best, then noone can say what is the best for you. How do you measure "best"?

Price?

Quality?

Ergonomics?

Love at first sight?

I measure "best" in what is best for me. Now this took me some 10 years to figure out, and a lot of money. Now I know what is the best camera for me, and that is the Leica M8.

If you want the "best" in terms of most expensive and status Leica, then stop looking at Digilux 3. That's an expensive Panasonic.

Go with the M8 or Look at the R-system. Get an R9 with the DMR. At this point with a family of lenses you have certainly atleast spent the money, that you can easily tell your friends "I've got the best"!

I have a friend who also just want "the best".

The Canon 1Ds MK3 and the top of the line Nikon outperforms the Digilux 3 in every aspect, despite low weight.

Good luck!

I have to say that I find all this emphasis on the "best" quite distasteful — the LUF at its worst — and has nothing to do with photography. Taking pictures of the house and the dog does not require a Leica; taking picrures for an exhibition does not require a Leica. Getting a Leica because one likes the camera and the lenses if fine; getting one because one has heard somewhere that it's the best is consumerism in it's worst sense.

Good god...

Poor guy.

I have a digilux 3. It is great! and unlike the M8 and DMR is has live view and autofocus and a general do it all zoom lens. So if you do not have the experience in photography and want something a little different that has low depreciation and a vast array of used R lenses on eBay for when you do get more experienced got for it. Sometimes you may just want to point and shoot having it all done for you, still with that Leica finished product when you print it.

Looking at this thread I had better sell the sports car as I do not track-day it 10 times a year!

:D
