alexc Posted October 24, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 24, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I will be able to borrow this lens for one day to try. If I want to try it for street shooting lets say at f8. With wate i do the following: put hyperfocal mark at one step down (5.6) and everything between 8 on the left side and 5.6 on the right side is basically in focus, between 3.5 feet and hyperfocal, so I can shoot without focusing and it works very good. obviously the same principle applies to summilux 35/1,4, however the DOF scale is much more dense and it is difficult evaluate DOF. any practical advise. glenerrolrd Posted October 24, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 24, 2007 Much will depend on how important achieveing "critical focus" is for your work. You can find the point of focus with WATE at 5.6 if you have the right subject....this is at 100% . I can not find it in a typical 8 x 10 print or in a typical sRGB web posting. I tried pre focusing with the 35/1.4 at 5.6 ..pick a target at about the typical lens to subject distance. I typically used 8ft and 15 ft ..I practiced by determining the distance to a head and shoulders image and a full body shot . This gave good results at 5.6 . If time permitted I would focus normally. So rather than using a hypothetical hyperfocal distance....I got better results by estimating the distance ..which i could do without bothering the subject. I also found many situations where shooting wide open even in good light gave a better rendering of the sceen. I think the summilux shines in weak light ..for sunny day shooting ..there are many lower cost options.
