A Question for Owners of 2+ M8s

I have three and there are slight differences in the focussing performance; one of them needs infinity changing to optimise for the APO 90/2 ASPH.

Otherwise, no differences in file performance, though one is looking like a plucked chicken with the leatherette removed from both the camera and the grip...

The nice thing about getting a second M8 (or a third) is that when you take it out of the box, it's instantly familiar, like meeting an old friend, all smartly dressed and pristine.

If you're using 2+ M8's its definitely worth noting that you want to set the folder numbering at different starting points on each camera so that there's no danger of repeating folder/image names if you share cards.

I found that having one black and the other chrome was useful for other reasons but that's a personal thing. Image quality is essentially identical between them. I did perform a Fors calibration for ACR for each one and they do measure slightly differently but not significantly.

Image wise ..I haven t seen any difference.....I had slight variations in focus calibration. tried this with another LUF and his 2 M8s were slightly different in focus..his were close ...my two M8s were calibrated in Solms are exactly the same now....I use one with a magnifier for 35 and up ....and the other without for 35 and wider. I have been working with two bodies really minimizing changing lenses and increases options when shooting quickly.

I have a black and a chrome and don't notice any difference in image quality. Focusing seems to be the smae on both now that I have adjusted both for infinity focus using my 50 Cron (A lens I know to be dead on from tests on both my bodies and Rogers 2 bodies).

I will be sending the black back to NJ because the rangefinder patch has a real glare to it when there is a bright light in front of and above. It really shows up when outside in sun light making it hard to focus correctly, actually hard to even look through the viewfinder.

Ken,

I'm surprised you're considering another body -- some of your posts a few months back were less than complimentary toward the M8. In any event, I hope you enjoy it. Since I purchased the M8 last December, my other cameras have become dusty orphans.

Good luck,

Larry

file quality should be the same, both running 1.107, but one of them, which has mounted WATE before, keeps popping up the 16/18/21 selection menu when I change setting when mounting other coded/ir filtered lens. as to focus problem, I have to adjust bodies to work with the 50mm and 90mm lens, the 28mm and shorter will compensate themselves with increased dof.

2 black - no differences - and it's so much easier for some kinds of work - I was documenting a workshop in Bangladesh today and using the 21 on one body / 75 lux on the other) - couldn't have done it without two bodies...

re file numbering I give each card a different starting number (L1xxx, L2xxx,L3 etc) - do this by formatting and renaming - there was a thread somewhere... You can see how this works with the two attached shot - one is off my card #2 and the other off card #4.

For interest, the closeup was with body 1, the group with body 2. Both processed in LR. Colour correction "Auto" in LR - lots of images today so no time to fine tune - the whole shoot in really ugly neon - the M8 RAWs handle it fine - but AWB in camera JPEGS would have been impossible.

Best

Thank you all for your replies.

Larry: Your surprise is understandable. No, my general opinion of the M8 has not changed. I do not want to ignite debate on a side topic but, in general, I do not have the strong affection for M8 that many others here seem to have. Still, it can produce some unique images and I am very glad that I have one. I use my M8 fairly frequently and have learned to work with / around many of it's most serious flaws and shortcomings. It's fun!

But in a moment of mature rational consideration I have decided to forego the second M8. While I enjoy rangefinder photography (film and digital) I am fundamentally a 21st century single-lens reflex guy. My digital slr cameras are, and will probably always be, my primary photographic tools and I feel that I have mastered them. While I do sometimes use my M8 for serious stock or commissioned work my Canon bodies take the vast majority of this load. Yes a second M8 would be occasionally convenient (i.e. using different focal lengths), and yes I would rather like to have a chrome M8 body along with my black. But the purchase would mostly be superfluous over-indulgence for me.

Actually, it was "pelikan1931"s photo, above, that provided that last tiny pull back from this decision. I recall vividly carrying two film cameras with different films and/or lenses thirty years ago. WIth all respect to "pelikan1931", I really don't ever want to do that again.

So, again, thank you all for your replies. But my particular thanks go to "pelikan1931" for giving me a terrific reality check. (No sarcasm intended!)
