I used a pair of M6's for many years until the oppurtunity cost of dealing with film became too high.  After that I flirted with a couple digital camera's but never enjoyed the handling or process and couldn't justify the cost of a digital M.  I basically stopped doing photography for 5 years, in that time I shot ~500 frames across two different cameras that were both eventually sold.

A few months ago I splurged on a Q2M, and have been fully back in love with the act of photography.  It's not a proper M, manual focus is a very different proposition with it but so much of the Q2 is right.  Reflecting on my M6 days, I thought there were a few improvements that could be made.  Someone at Leica clearly also had a similar idea when they produced the M-D / M10-D to return to the pure process of capturing images.

I suppose as the Q2 family falls in a bit of a uncanny valley of true still's camera and point and shoot for influencers, market research has deemed the Q2-D wouldn't be a commercial success.   Well I don't need to wait for Leica, I've created my own Q2M-D and while it seems perfectly silly to do it actually increases my enjoyment of the camera.

Everything I need can be controlled with a physical button, I've no need for an LCD.  I'm not tempted to stop in the moment and chimp, or show other people the screen, I simply focus on capturing images and unload my card once a week like I used to develop film.  In most cases my battery also lasts the week.  I like this separation of time between shooting and reviewing, no need for any instant gratification, the differed sort is so much sweeter.

Haa, you took it a step further..

My cameras are always taped for many reasons..

But the main is to avoid people asking to see photos, but also gives the look of "old useless camera" that no one wants to steal

i DO need the buttons though.

Great thread.

@Nimar Do you change ISO? With the thumbwheel perhaps?

Indeed, Use manual ISO via thumb wheel.

I played around with auto ISO but in M doesn’t allow for full creative control as doesn’t do exposure compensation. Also found exposure compensation in (A) annoying as when relying on it would often forget about it. Being in full M means I actually pay attention to the meter.

Can technically still press them, though haven’t found a reason.  Using multi point exposure and a spot focus point it’s just like using a film M.

Going further, leaving the 35mm crop lines on makes it even more like using a digital M with a 35 f/2 and a ~30mp full frame sensor. With the added benefit of being able to recrop out if you need to.

I suspect this might have been part of the original design that later got canned but it would be super cool if they added the extra image portion for the 28mm frame lines as well. And maybe zoomed in for each crop so you always got a .86 view or similar.  This feels like the real future of a digital Leica but the marketing would be hard as people would get hung up about it not being true full frame etc etc and not understanding how the optics work.

Not a 100% reliable one, if you’ve never reset it then file number is an indication though it can easily be reset to zero.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I‘d love a flip screen for this exact reason in the Q3. Best of both worlds. Change my mind.

One issue…according to both Canon and Nikon repair departments, broken articulating screens, especially the hinge is one of their most common repairs.

I couldn’t find a source for that claim. I can see how that hinge could break when you knock the camera down with the screen flipped out. Otherwise this thing has been solid since the Canon 60D for me personally. If you never use the rear screen that’s not an issue anyway. If you do use it and don‘t want to flip it that’s fine too. If you do use it, just flip it around and attach back onto the camera instead of leaving it flipped out (protruding out of the camera body). I see only benefits, apart from having the hinge where the buttons are on the Q2 and any other digital Leica M.

I’m in the biz…I deal with repair departments (including Leica) weekly.

Face it…no camera company (or their repair dept) is going to come out and say…this is a problem…if anything they deny, deny, deny.

Case in point…it took Leica ages to actually admit there was a corrosion issue with the M9 sensor.

Oh that’s interesting! Is it because people knock it off or because the hinge breaks (a flatcable)? Would be very interested to know and quite telling who‘s at fault. User or the engineers. My guess would be the user, which is usually the case.

Oh, it’s usually the user 😂

You wouldn’t believe how many people I’ve had in my office with a broken articulating screen sheepishly admit they forgot it was sticking out, had it on the shoulder strap and they bashed it walking through a doorway or something.

Again, case in point.  Canon consumer DSLR (T6i, T7i, T8i etc…not sure what the European versions are called) always have a ‘student version’ (T6, T7 etc)…one of the main differences is no articulated screens because student break them do often 😂

Where would you put Leica’s 3 buttons? If you shift everything to the right you probably need a joystick controller. You almost certainly would have to make the flippy-flappy screen scissor-hinged, pulling out from the bottom to go horizontal.

For me an absolute non buying reason. Moving parts break easier.
