Just a few more quickies but all wide open and i really like the rendering from this lens.

Looking forward to see how it renders in lower contrast light also but it is pretty opened up in this strong light. look forward to putting it in the bag

Mark this is really a sweet little lens. Believe it or not and hard to tell by these somewhat is the contrast is a little smoother looking than the ASPH. This one I cooked up some but that bokeh is very nice looking. Very happy decision to get one

Beautiful pictures Guy!

I've been off-line for a while so am a bit more clueless than usual: what is the "version IV"?

It is a 35 cron pre ASPH. There were four versions of this lens prior to new ASPH design.

To save me some of the searching to figure it out (not lazy but more dumb in knowing the lenses), what time period was the version IV from? How hard are they to find?

I think they were made from about the late 70's through 1998 when it was replaced by the 35 Cron Asph. They show up pretty regularly on eBay, but since we've all been talking about them here prices have gone up a bit and now they're running almost the same price as used 35 Cron Asphs.

Cheers,

I know you guys have multiple lenses at the same focal length but if you had to chose between the version IV and the Asph which would you keep?

For me the Asph version was just to strong in contrast for the bright sun I have to deal with plus the Pre Asph is considered by leica fans the Bokeh King , hard to argue that one to be honest but if you shoot outdoors in dull light or overcast conditions all the time the ASPH maybe a better choice because of the stronger contrast. Plus subject matter will always have a role in these decisions. There is a thread or several actually on the forum that speaks of the 35 Crons and it is a nice thread with lots of details and samples of the different versions that you may want to read

So, Guy, is it safe to say that the reputation of this lens is valid and that I can keep using mine:D Some of you examples are classics in the way they demonstrate the OOF gradient qualities. My having this lens is more dumb luck than accute discernment....I got it, it was good and I kept it....good on the M8, I'll keep it...it is just a plane fine lens.

a little OT but i am going to sneak a 12mm CV lens in here. This lens for the money is really nice to have tugged in the far corner of the bag ready and willing to go to work. Leica really needs to get something out in this area. I have been begging maybe something will happen or not but there missing the boat.

FTR I don't own any multiple versions of lenses in the same focal length. Re my decision, I just went through comparing 35's for the M8 and after comparing the 35 Cron Asph, 35 Lux Asph, 35 Lux Pre-Asph and this 35 version IV, I kept the version IV. HOWEVER, the IV is NOT as sharp wide open as the 35 Cron Asph, nor does it have as much contrast, so if those are important to you, then the Asph may be the better choice. Basically, they are all great lenses with slightly different rendering characteristics, and a good case can be made for keeping any one of them over the others. I kept the IV simply because I love the way it renders, as Guy's images show.

Terry here is one on ebay to give you a idea what to look for. I have no clue who the seller is but as usual proceed with caution

LEICA 35/2 SUMMICRON VER IV 'King of Bokeh' M8 M7 M6 M3 - (eBay item 290172189406 end time Oct-25-07 12:57:37 PDT)

Guy: FYI, that's my lens, which I'm off-loading because I've got two of them :-)

Here's a bit more ver IV bokeh:

To be honest, while the IV is a great little lens, the bokeh wide open can at times be distracting, and I think it is in the photo I've just uploaded. Not sure what makes the difference, but it isn't consistently so even at the same aperture. Most of the time it's extremely pleasant.
