M8 sudden death

A fortnight ago I reported that my M8 broke down with sudden death. I had a lot of advice about how to reset the camera, including exhausting batteries etc.

Anyway, I now have the repair sheet from Leica. It is said to be an electronic malfunction, and that an "Elektrischer Umbau" or presumably changing some electronic components is necessary. What these are, I do not know.

At the same time, it is reported that the rangefinder needs to be adjusted and cleaned. All is under guarantee, and no problems.

This camera saw 30 minutes of careful use before it collapsed. It is understandable that electronic components may be unstable, but how a rangefinder adjustment and cleaning can be necessary after 30 minutes of use escapes me. Not that it matters, Leica were very quick to start repairing the camera and if they discover and correct other issues that were not seen in a final inspection before the camera was shipped first time, so much the better.

Hello Ivar,

Good to hear that your M8 is on the mend.

As to the itemized repair bill - the fact that the camera has only been used for 30 minutes has no bearing on the possible complexity of the repair. I guess that during the repair procedure the rangefinder adjustment might be disturbed and that is the reason why "At the same time, it is reported that the rangefinder needs to be adjusted and cleaned."

This has to do more with accounting practices - somebody will be billed for the repair and all chargeable procedures have to be itemized.

Kind regards,

Jan
