Advertisement Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Hi odd, Take a look here Matt, semi-matt, pearl or glossy?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
fotohuis Posted October 21, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 21, 2007 It's a matter of taste and/or subject, the same with cold, normal or warmtone paper...... but I like a portrait on semi-mat/velvet and warmtone paper e.g. Fomatone MG 332/333 PE/RC) or 132 (Baryt). Landscapes more on neutral Fomabrom Variant 111, sometimes warmtone Fomatone MG 131 and then glossy. It's the same with the frame, white or black passe partout paper or grey. Normally I keep this very simple. The subject must be the picture, not the frame
odd Posted October 22, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted October 22, 2007 Hi Robert As always, you give a fast and good answer to questions on this part of the forum. Thanks. This is about what I prefer too. I’ v also tried matt paper for pictures that are presented in frames with glass. This to prevent reflects both from the paper and the glass. martin Posted October 22, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 22, 2007 I like the "matny" Fomaspeed 312, it has a warm deep brown tone and a bright white paper. I often buy it direct in Prague. In Gernany I can also get the Fomaspeed 313 which has a kind of velvet surface. This is for birthday or christmass gifts only, because it's rare and seldom. The glosy paper is not whalt I realy like, I think the glosy surface is a little bit sensitive and so you can see all scratches.
vic vic Posted October 23, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 23, 2007 hi odd very true ...... it depends very much on taste and on what u want to do with your photo.... for example.... i love glossy baryta paper for fluent full tones .... it has big range in tonality so good deep contrast with beautiful gradation can be achived.... the matt papers i love for harder work when i put the photograph slightly into a "graphic" forms... some other printer may prefer the matt paper for more gentle and lighter work etc..... for me, paper choice plays important role about the way i interpret the final image..... so it is not just reaching about the same tonality on glossy or matt , warm or neutral.... it is more about interpreting the image differently on different papers..... robert and martin.... hahha ...... i printed the recent exhibition on foma variant 111 gloss and fomatone 132 matny.... first time i used foma paper and im so glad.... the variant is eassy - it is very much like MCC111..... the fomatone 132 took one printing session to get used to it but them i simply get in love with it - found the "look" i wanted and it just worked great .... really love the slight yellow-olive-brown colour tint it gets when developed in nuetral devloper for relativly normal-short time oh by the way.... have u noticed how much black-marks (silvers etc) foma 132 leaves in the tray of developer ? :-)

fotohuis Posted October 25, 2007 Share #7 Posted October 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Fomabrom Variant is made on the Agfa MCC base fiber paper due to the fact Foma bought it from Agfa Photo when they went in bankruptcy. So very similar paper and the same is valid for the Rollei Vintage papers which are especially made for Rollei from Foma in the Czech Republic. Not very special news because it's also written on the Rollei Vintage paper boxes. Very good photo paper either.

fotohuis Posted October 27, 2007 Share #9 Posted October 27, 2007 Fomatone MG 542 is discontinued because Schöller (Osnabrück) is not able to deliver this basic material anymore. For the Fomatone MG 532, Foma found another supplier elsewhere. The first new production is just finished and under test now. I am just expecting some test samples from this rather new photo paper.
