_©_ Posted October 16, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) hi all after much drooling i have a/added a M8 body to my leica bag (been shooting with M6s since 1988) and b/registered to this forum. i have kept one of my two M6 bodies and the following lenses: CV12, CV15, 24/2.8 asph, 35/1.4 asph, 50/2.8 (latest version), 75/1.4, 90/2.8 and 135/4 m-elmar. (i sold one M6 and an old goggled 21/2.8 to fund the M8.) here are the promised newbie Qs: 1/ to code or not to code? and if so, which lenses? i intended to have the 24 and the 35 coded by leica. what would be the benefits of coding the 50, the 75 and the 90? (iirc, the 135 cannot be coded?) 2/ which adapters for the two CVs? so far i've used my two CVs with plain vanilla LTM adapters. after browsing thru these pages i am under the impression that there is a consensus on using a milich-coded adapter for the CV 15. correct? and what about the CV 12 - if so, how should the 12 be coded? 3/ which IR/UV filters? which of my lenses will benefit most from the filters and which can do well w/o filters? is there an adapter to use one and the same IR/UV filter on the two CVs? can other filter brands be used on the CVs or will it have to be the leica filters? 4/ can the (latest series) collapsible 50/2.8 be used on the M8? the manual is kinda vague... thx in advance for your help, hints and advise! ©

I don't own any CV or other lenses that need adapters. 3/ Leica. You will need them for all lenses if you want the color to be right and not deal with IR problems. stephengilbert Posted October 16, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 16, 2007 Re question 2: some LTM adapters have a cutout on one side which of course is right where the coding needs to be. You need an adapter with a full skirt so the coding can be applied. If your adapters are not cut out, I'd recommend sending them to John Milch, who will mill them with indentations where the coding must go. This will allow accurate coding and will keep the paint from wearing off when you change lenses. If you don't have the full skirt adapters, you can probably find some, but they're becoming expensive. (I understand that CV is or will be making them, but don't know the cost.) I'd just order two from John.
wparsonsgisnet Posted October 16, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 16, 2007 Christian, I am not coding -- because I don't have enuf lenses to do without them for this period of time. I have some Leica filters and some B-W filters. If I need to handle cyan drift and vignetting, I will use Cornerfix. I am not having problems at this time -- including using a CV 15 with the B-W filter. I recommend Milich adapters and hoods. Great stuff.
Jamie Roberts Posted October 16, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 16, 2007 Hi Christian, welcome to the forum. My take on your three questions... Code everything wider than 35 (and 35 is the call. At 35 and above the evidence of cyan in most shots is nearly nill. I haven't coded anything from 35 up) Since you're talking CV wides, get John Milich's coded adapters and be done with it. They will make a big difference Filter all your lenses of course. But wider than 35, I'd only use Leica filters. IOW, for all your coded lenses, use Leica filters because the firmware is correcting for those filters. Talk to John Milich about filter holders. Hope this helps. Mark Pope Posted October 16, 2007 Share #6 Posted October 16, 2007 I've coded my 15, 21 and 28mm lenses with the Milich adaptors and I've just received my 35mm summicron back from Leica after having that done as well. I'd second Bills view on the quality of John Milich's products. I also have 50mm Summicron and 90mm Elmarit lenses. I will get these coded, but the reason is to be able to record the focal length in the EXIF data. In fact I've asked for one of the lenses to be coded as a Christmas present... I will also get a coded mount for my 75mm CV when a) funds permit and when I find out the correct code for the lens, assuming the new 75 Summarit has a different code to the summicron and/or summilux.
