Epson P-5000 workflow

Hi everyone,

I was given a P-5000 to work with the M8 for backup. Epson tells me they still have no intention of supporting Leica's DNG files in the future, but there is a note that if I save the file in Photoshop or with the DNG converter I can then store and see an embedded jpeg on the P-5000. What conversion are they referring to?

Does this mean I need to download to the computer, do this conversion, then backup on the P-5000? Is this the workflow you use?

I could also use the DNG + jpeg camera setting, but then I still have a bunch of unreadable DNGs that I might have trouble associating with a specific jpeg in case I want to move or delete a file.

Epson's decision seems most unfortunate...

Thanks for all of your help, steve

I used to add jpg to be able to display that on my old Epson P-2000. The P-5000 retails for $600.00 for $400 more, I went for a Samsung Q1 Ultra with its excellent 7" screen. I loaded LR in that and now, I am using that in a similar way as the Epson P-X000 series. Not only you can view the images but you can work on them, if you so decide. Plus you can use that as you can browse the internet, check your emails, etc. I am enjoying that unit and I don't have lug my heavy laptop anymore. Just make sure you get the newer version of the Samsung with a higher screen resolution and a built-in split keyboard.

The Q1 looks neat, but a review I read claimed that with wireless on, the battery life is only around 2 hours? That would be a dealbreaker. In fact, I think I would rather go in the other direction, and get something like a Jobo Giga One Ultra. Lots of battery life, and no distracting image editing abilities :)

Carsten,

The screen drains the battery quite a bit. I believe if you work continously at a pretty bright screen setting, you can get 2 full hours. If you use it to just transfer the files from your SD card, you can get about 3+ hours. That is plenty of battery power for that. When you get to your hotel/camp you can connect that unit to the power outlet and you can play with the setting and review your work of the day. They have a battery with a double capacity for $99.00 if necessary.
