Is My Absence of Lens Problems My Shortcomings?

Like many of us, I've had my share of problems with my M8. The first one has been to the hospital in Solms twice -- the first time because of the recall, second time because of SDS, which may or may not have been caused by sand in the shutter. One thing I have not had are problems with my lenses. Any of them, and I should say I have the gamut of focal lengths from the WATE to a 90 Elmarit, save for 21mm. For the past year, I have read with great interest the reports of M8 users who have discovered a range of issues with their lenses, most of them back focus-related. Any problems I have had with my focusing, I chalk up to my deficiencies as a photographer. Having said that, I just haven't had many problems with back focus, front focus, or side focus, over focus, under focus, or backward focus. Is this evidence of the lens gods smiling on me? Or does it reveal that I am an exceptionally bad photographer? JB

All of the above.

I have only had a problem with one lens once I got the bodies to focus correctly at infinity with my best lens, the 50mm Cron. The lens that gives me a problem is the 75mm Cron ASPH. It backfocuses slightly on both bodies. To correct for this I focus at the short side of In Focus.

When I get the time I will send this lens in to have it corrected.

LOL - well, I'm pretty much in the same boat here.:)

I think the truth is that as long as nothing nasty happens with a lens you don't spend too much time taking photos of resolution charts or brick walls . . . . . and when you do spend time taking photos of resolution charts you inevitably find things aren't quite perfect.

I've spent my time at it with Nikon lenses, it's a time consuming and depressing business.

On the other hand, maybe you're just lucky, but if that's the case, you aren't alone!

Chris - many thanks. I am a slow focuser, which is why I don't do a lot of street shooting. The problems I have with individual shots are, I believe, my fault, not Leica's! When I find a problem not of my own making, I'll become more, if you will, focused on charts!

And Jono - glad the Nikon problems drove you to Leicas! Cheers, JB
