haanes Posted October 14, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Scrolling through the forum threads I find quite a few concerning the finish of the m8; whether to remove the base-plate protective cover or/and sticker, which finish to chose (black or chrome) etc. Still, most of us put tape on the logo an the m8-marking. Why is a mint finish such a big deal when many of us actually prefer a worn look? The camera is, after all, a tool and a toy, not a fragile object of art. Is it because of the potential second hand-price, or are Leica-users just that dandy? Could we avoid this tendency by not focusing on outer finish when buying second hand gear? Cheers, Henrik
Advertisement Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Hi haanes, Take a look here Why is "mint" a quality mark?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
AGeoJO Posted October 14, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 14, 2007 The reason to cover the Leica logo is to deter potential thieves from recognizing your camera as a Leica. The classic look of the M8 and the well-used appearance work well to render the "not worth stealing" effect. If it is coming down to show casing or selling the equipment, on the other hand, you want that piece to look as classy and as minty as possible. Well, that's about it, I guess. M6J Posted October 14, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 14, 2007 I bought the M8 as a small camera that will not panic people (as my Nikon D2X does) and I covered some places to make it look as "cheap" as I can. Guess what: I works! I don't do it for the thieves. Thieves would never choose a Leica (at least in my country) from a bunch of cameras with a couple of Canons and Nikons in it
Marquinius Posted October 14, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 14, 2007 Jordan, Thieves came into my house and stole both my Canons, my Apple Macbook and assorted other things. But they left a Leica M6 I had at that time sitting in plain view. So yes, they will not pick it up. But no, I wouldn't bet on it. Btw: installed burglar alarm now, if only to sleep better. On the streets it is going to be a different thing. I'm going to Vietnam shortly and am aware that I really have to take care of my camera all day long. Insurance covers the cost, but then I would still be over there without a camera ... I'll take two camera's I guess. Marco
