rtphotos Posted October 12, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, Yesterday morning on my way to work I picked up my M8 to stick into my camera bag and was very suprised to feel it was HOT! I checked the power switch and it was in the OFF position. Quickly took off the bottom plate and heard the warning beep that indicates that the camera was still ON and removed the battery. The battery was also very warm but don't think it was any hotter than the camera body. The camera had been sitting unused since the night before. The battery had a full charge and was in the camera for a couple of days. I suspect a faulty power switch, but I'm not sure. My M8 has a s/n 319xxxx. I requested a replacement camera as it is only 2 months old. I am waiting to hear back from Leica NJ. Anyone else have experiences with hot cameras? Did you have it replaced or get it repaired? How long did it take and did Leica give you an explanation to what was faulty? thanks for any info! rt

Hookeye Posted October 13, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 13, 2007 Hello "rt". I am "sorry" to tell you that I have no experience with this problem myself. But I have come accross this previously on the Forum. You could do a search yourself. Here are some relevant links I found through a simple search. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/35733-new-m8-user-some-problems.html?highlight=heating // http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/25267-m8-dead.html?highlight=overheating The last one is particularly interesting as one entry (#10) says this problem can arise if the camera is left in the bag with the on/off switch not perfectly "off", but actually between the "off" and "s" positions, something which is easy enough if you happen to give it a litte bump upon placing it in the bag. Hopefully, by my "bumping" your thread to the top of the list you will catch people's interest and you may get some more and better answers;)
pat hattori Posted October 13, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 13, 2007 Hey there rt, Sorry to hear about your problem. I've had the exact same thing happen to my M8 last week. It ran hot after storage, and drained a fully loaded battery each time. This happened 3 times. Strange thing is it started doing this after almost a month of heavy use. Never noticed it previously. I took mine to the distributor, and he sent it to Solms. I got a loaner for the duration. The rep told me I'd be returned my camera within 30 days. Mind you I live in Europe. Paul_S Posted October 13, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 13, 2007 I had it once, a hot camera when the camera was new (Dec. 2006). Delaer replaced the battery which was empty with little use on my behalf. It did not occur since. We will never know whether the battery was the curse and the replacement the cure. My M8 has been in Solms twice, so that might have its impact too.
rtphotos Posted October 13, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted October 13, 2007 Thank you all for the replies so far. Funny, when I searched the archives I think I used the word "overheat" and didn't get the relevent "hits", so thanks hookeye for the links. I'm fairly sure I had the power switch turned completely OFF when I left it on the shelf the previous night, but nonetheless, a pretty scary situation. Pat, you are lucky to get a loaner camera during the repairs, but I definitely am not a professional, so I don't expect the same courtesy from Leica. I am hoping that they will just exchange for a new camera since mine is only 2 months old. We'll see. I am hoping Mr. Fisk replies after the weekend although it appears from some forum posts that Leica NJ does not communicate so well. The word "quirky" keeps coming up in regards to the M8. Yep, that's my camera's new nickname. Thanks again for the replies so far, rt
robertwright Posted October 14, 2007 Share #6 Posted October 14, 2007 I think there are two types of overheating, really really overheated and very warm. My first M8 that died suddenly a day after I got it experienced the really really kind, again, it a bag, shortly after it ceased working. It was dead with minor brain activity thereafter. I got it replaced and the replacement has been working fine, experiencing what others have experienced, firmware faults like the venetian blinds thing, etc. Two days ago I believe it was in my bag and not off, and the shutter was partially depressed the whole time, and when I discovered it it was warm but not hot and the battery was drained. I changed to a charged battery and it was fine. charged the drained battery and it was fine also. My on-off switch is getting loose and I need to send the camera in plus some usual maintenance, but the switch moves too easily in my opinion and needs to be much tighter. rtphotos Posted October 31, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted October 31, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) UPDATE: Robert Fisk of Leica NJ replied very quickly to my email and asked that I mail the defective camera to his attention. 2-weeks later (today) I receive a brand new replacement camera (sn 320xxxx)! I'm very happy with the quick turnaround and attention provided by Mr. Fisk, and Leica USA. He responded to my inquiries promptly by email or a phone call. Sarah was also very polite and helpful. But I gotta say that I installed a new battery tonight and before I can even take the first pic with the new camera I get the "venetian blind" thingy. Felt weird - familiar and almost comforting. Not really, but some of you might know what I mean. sigh. I did not get a concrete answer from Leica NJ as to what might be the cause of the overheating, so nothing more I can add in that respect. Wish me luck with Quirky II. rt
