Yesterday, I accidentally dropped my silver Elmarit 21mm ASPH while on a boat. The lens bounced off the rocks and sank like a rock. I was able to recover the lens but the front element is shattered and there is water in the lens. Fortunately I have passport warranty on the lens and will be sending it to NJ. I wanted to ask how long leica NJ takes to get a replacement? Will they try to fix it or will it be replaced? Also, do they send back to Solms. I haven't talked to Robert Fisk yet and wanted to ask the users here that have used the passport warranty.

the passport warranty really covers things like that???

Yes and for a period of 3 year from date of purchase. That is one reason not to buy used lenses for near the going retail price. The passport warranty is NOT transferable, at least here in the USA.

Twenty odd years ago in Venice, I stepped onto a small boat, kept steady by my moron brother in law...

To make the story short, next thing I knew I was at the bottom of the filthy canal, my left hand alone out of the water, holding my bag, my right hand clutching my M6 and 50lux underwater.

Back at the hotel I put the camera, lens and film in a plastic bag filled with tab water, where they stayed for two months, until I returned to NY.

I took the M6 to Leitz NJ where they replaced it with a brand new M6... God bless them.

At the time they said they were going to put it in a window with the venetian water and all.

The 50lux sat for another month in water, being out of warranty, then I took it to the old leica importer in Genoa, where they dismantled it and put it back together with loving care.

The film went to Kodak in a smaller plastic bag full of water (you should have seen the shop owner's face) and came back developed... images did look the part thou.

Still got the M6, the 50lux and the photos... and the moron brother in law...

About 1984 I dropped my 40mm Summicron on a wll by the Danube while taking pictures of the Iron Link bridge between Buda and Pest. The bayonet flange was bent. I went to a camera shop where they use a pair of pliers to bend the flange back so I could continue to use the lens. When I got back to Canada I sent the lens to Leica Toronto and they sent it to Wetzlar where a new mount was machined and installed. Cost me C$250 but was still impressive service for a lens which had been made about 20 years before. Some of the upfront cost of Leica can be justified in the thoroughness of the service for old pieces.

Cheers

Howard

I'm sorry to hear this but isn't it wonderful to have a warranty like that?

Cheers,

Parev Garin,

Hopefully your tragedy wil be short lived. You will need however to make a couple of compromises;

1-You will have to settle for a black lens. Leica stopped making and selling the chrome three years ago... there are one to be found..

2- With the extreme lenses shortage, you may have to wait a bit... or settle for a code U (demo lens). On that subject trust Rob Fisk, he will stir you in the right direction... Cheers,

Jean
